Audience Member Citizen Lane (7.5) is an entertaining documentary drama about the life of Sir Hugh Lane (of Dublin gallery fame) featuring an unrecognisable Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (Love/Hate's Nidge) in the title role, which he plays excellently. Acted reconstruction scenes during a documentary normally look awful but this pleasingly bucks the trend. Would be more at home on Netflix, given its length (81 minutes) and subject matter, but great to see this feature amidst the current generally-awful-muck in the cinema currently. Overall Verdict : Very Good Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member wonderful docudrama. Fascinating subject. Great acting. Cath Clarke Guardian Lane was a snob, but he believed in art for the people. Rated: 3/5 Apr 5, 2021 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times Working from Mark O'Halloran's fiendishly clever script, the December Bride director and dexterous editor Mick Mahon have fashioned a project as elegant as its subject. Rated: 4/5 May 18, 2018 Full Review Veronica Lee The Arts Desk This is a little-known story given its due prominence in O'Sullivan's lovely film. Rated: 4/5 Apr 19, 2021 Full Review Rob Aldam Backseat Mafia A docudrama which shines the light of one of Ireland's forgotten sons. Apr 9, 2021 Full Review Darragh McManus Irish Independent There's more than enough interesting information and inherent drama to make Lane's life worthy of a documentary. What really lifts O'Sullivan's film above the norm is how he goes about it. Rated: 4/5 Sep 6, 2018 Full Review Katy Hayes Sunday Times (UK) One of the brilliant things a well-made documentary can do is distill a complex yarn into an 80-minute digestible shape, and this story is complicated.
