Critics Consensus

Challenging and rewarding in equal measure, Climax captures writer-director Gaspar Noé working near his technically brilliant and visually distinctive peak.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Regardless the various attempts at shock value (with scenes involving self-mutilation and abortion) seem downright desperate. Mar 16, 2020 Full Review Ben Croll TheWrap Just like Possession, this tale of stylized hysteria is an absolute scream. Feb 12, 2020 Full Review Michael Koresky Film Comment Magazine In the latest goofy provocation from a director who never saw a space-dank dungeon or sunny bedroom-upon which he couldn't unleash a swirly-twirly camera, Noé puts a pansexual, multicultural dance troupe through its paces before sending them to hell. Mar 21, 2019 Full Review Bianca Garner Filmotomy There is so much potential here, and it's so frustrating that Noé didn't go even further. Apparently, Climax was shot with only a 5 page long script and it shows. Oct 11, 2024 Full Review D.M. Victor I Dear Lord this movie is boring. I understand wanting a build-up to the tension and set the stage, but this opening is unbelievably dreadful. I am 30 minutes in and so far and every section in this film feels 7 minutes too long. 10 minutes of introductions for each character talking about the reasons they love dance, what they're willing to do to make it etc. Already you're faced with the most aggressively irritating type of people, but fine, some viewers might like this type. Having a relatively unlikeable cast of characters can even elevate a horror film, so long as you don't hit the audience with a follow up of... 10 minutes of dancing at their party. I don't even need to say why this is just soul-sucking for anyone that came for horror and is now watching... this. Even then, some people might actually love dance party horror, maybe that's even a thing. All I know is that you definitely lose me if your next move is... 10 minutes of the same irritating people having more or less the same irritatingly boring party conversations 3 or 4 different ways. That's 30 whole minutes of literally NOTHING interesting happening at all. So far this movie feels like a performing arts dance group got drunk at a house party one day and decided to make a horror film while AT the party. They quickly realised that they knew nothing about what constitutes even a halfway decent horror flick, so they spent the time making a filmed showcase of the only skill they actually had... dance. I'm sure some people enjoy this, but I won't be giving it 30 more minutes of my time. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/25 Full Review Steffan S This Movie is a Baaad LSD Trip. But in a good Way. I love the one Shot Camera angles. This is one of the most disturbing movies i know. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/25 Full Review Edgar O It might be the worst a24 movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/05/25 Full Review Dallas H I believe Gaspar Noé has a directorial knack for pushing function and technique over storytelling. He likes long-winded, uncut takes with a roving camera. He likes to utilize production tools and tricks to create an environment that will feel familiar to the viewer yet also harsh at the same time. I didn't care for this movie. Caring about or connecting with any characters was difficult as the movie felt too cold and distant. I felt sympathy for the demise of a few of them. But no signs of feeling any empathy. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review David F Amazing dancing at the start but it goes downhill from there. I’m a big fan of both LSD and avante-garde films, but I just wish there was more going on here than people acting like they are freaking out scene after scene. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review David R Only Gaspar Noe can create like this. A horrible story portrayed in cinematic expertise.
