Critics Consensus

Disturbing and thought-provoking, A Clockwork Orange is a cold, dystopian nightmare with a very dark sense of humor.

Pauline Kael The New Yorker I can’t accept that Kubrick is merely reflecting this post-assassinations, post-Manson mood; I think he’s catering to it. I think he wants to dig it. Sep 12, 2023 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review A stone-cold classic, no getting around the fact... Sep 21, 2021 Full Review Charles Champlin Los Angeles Times I'm afraid I found A Clockwork Orange brilliant but disappointing, its moments of power offset by an overwrought stridency and its message overbalanced by the medium. Dec 21, 2020 Full Review Hayley Croke Loud and Clear Reviews Kubrick creates a harsh and unforgiving picture of society in this film, a society that thinks in black and white refusing to entertain color. The quick and easy fix is seemingly the only one worth indulging in. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 20, 2024 Full Review Paul Klein FILMHOUNDS Magazine Kubrick, ever the provocateur, would probably enjoy its enduring legacy, and recoil at the same time. Rated: 5/5 Jul 4, 2024 Full Review Rory Doherty InSession Film The rare Kubrick film that feels like a misfire, and although the impeccable filmmaking techniques are still admirable, it’ll be tough appreciating the full effect of the shocking content when you’re checking your watch every five minutes. Gavin W. Maybe I would need to watch it again, but I don’t get the appeal. I’ve been wanting to watch this film for a few years now but it wasn’t streaming anywhere so I just stopped waiting and bought it. Much to my surprise, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Alex is our main protagonist but I just don’t understand what he is saying half the time. The words and sentences he uses go into incredible detail and you can understand that he is different. But it still doesn’t make any sense to me. With the way he expresses his thoughts and his accent, I just didn’t find the appeal. The one great thing I have to say about Alex is how complex he is. Incorporating so many challenges and themes into his character and story is most likely why people keep coming back and how the film has found its “Cult Classic” following. The main takeaway I got from this film is that I think it is a film like “Get Out”, “Inception” and “Citizen Kane” where they get better after rewatching. You take what you know from the first watch and incorporate it into the second, third or even fourth watches to catch things you didn’t get before. Ultimately, this is an extremely weird and uncomfortable film and I would recommend watching it by yourself.
