      john l While Red Skelton is a respectable and skilled actor, this movie is a shameless remake of King Vidor's 1931 Best Picture Oscar winner, The Champ. It pales badly by comparison. Considering its time and the classic Freddie Freeloader look I still like it. ~ Rik Billock Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member I was never a fan of "The Champ," Wallace Berry's version or the even worst Jon Voight version, so I was not expecting much from this unofficial remake with Red Skelton as the alcoholic/gambler father barely hanging on to a failing career. His son adores him and sticks with him through it all. Needless to say, the film is a tear jerker, tugging at soft hearts everywhere. Skelton handles the dramatic parts well enough and performs some of his well known comic routines. Jane Greer has the thankless role of Skelton's ex-wife.
