John DeFore The Hollywood Reporter 12/13/2019
Humorless but unpretentious, the film will play well with those seeking new takes on superhero tropes... while others will resent having a still-viable non-comics genre infected by angsty mutants. Go to Full Review

Essentially a humbler, grungier indie "X-Men" without the same dependence on splashy effects, "Code 8" is a solid genre effort from director Jeff Chan. Go to Full Review
Noel Murray Los Angeles Times 12/06/2019
The ideas outpace the action in a movie that's clearly been made with passion and intelligence, but without the kind of zip that this kind of story demands. Go to Full Review

Code 8 is a troubled but engaging world that has the potential to spin off into something bigger and better. Go to Full Review

Chan does a good job balancing the action with ideas, effortlessly mixing and matching real word and sci fi elements to create a movie that has enough to say about the fear of diversity and tolerance to earn a look. Go to Full Review

Tight for what it was. It's not going to rock your world...but viewers should begrudgingly admit that they had a good time with this. Despite some obvious problems, it's enjoyable. Go to Full Review

tommy J 3d Cool movie, watched it after seeing the 2nd. Very cool the Amell brothers get to work together. See more David C Nov 6 Parts sci fi, part gangster movie. Decent in both parts See more Goose R. @rodrigug Oct 9 In the future , 4% of the population has powers. Connor has the power of electricity, however to get a license to work using the powers is very expensive. He is struggling to make ends meet, while having a mom with a terminal disease. Story line is cool and it has come good twists but at the end it’s just an average super powers movie 🍿🍿🍿/5 on Netflix See more Jonathan K Sep 28 First off, I thought the two lead actors look like they could be cousins and so it was a weird casting choice to have them not be related in the movie. Well, it turns out they literally are cousins. Okay. The movie's fine. Even good, I guess. The world they built is cool, and I wanted more of that: the politics, the cultures, the socio-political landscape. I wanted a bigger scope, which is the kind of thing I usually want from sci-fi. Show me what the governments are up to, whether the police force is corrupt, stuff like that. In a dystopian world like this, you just know there's a lot more happening than the smaller, emotional, familial story they chose to tell. That story, mother and son, is kind of rote, and it wasn't even executed all that well. I found myself not really caring. Robbie Amell didn’t sell the emotion for me, maybe because his character was making shady choices, which is harder to connect with. The special effects were good, the class-based powers were interesting, but overall it felt like two movies smashed together. The first half worked better. It had world-building, newsreels, learning about powers, the drugs, the syndicate. The second half, with the son desperate to save his mother, was much smaller in scope, and I just wasn’t into it. The pacing really dragged there. See more Natalie A Aug 2 I am writing the review whilst still watching it! I am that disengaged and bored. Predictable, I am afraid really nothing new. I would like to say something nice but I can't think of anything positive about this film. It sometimes has nice camera shots that reminds me of District 9 that's pretty much it. Is it really only just over an hour and a half 😲 See more Steve S Jun 20 Watchable trash. Quite boring at times for an action thriller about mutants with super powers - I was fast forwarding certain scenes by the end. Mildly charismatic performances by several actors is probably the only positive thing I can say about this movie. Weird tone shifts between the mutants doing “badass” stuff versus trying to make the audience care about the plight of side characters we’ve spent about 3 total minutes of screen time with. Lots of telling not showing to rush through the extremely contrived plot (the movie is mercifully brief), plot threads that go nowhere left and right, nonsensical character motivations. Those with fully functional brains should steer clear. See more Read all reviews
