On the edge of the Antarctic Circle, a ship approaches a desolate island, far from all shipping lanes. On board is a young man who is on his way to assume the post of weather observer and live in solitude at the end of the earth. He finds no trace of the man he has been sent to replace, just a deranged castaway who has witnessed a horror he refuses to name. For the next twelve months, his entire world will consist of a deserted cabin, trees, rocks, silence and the surrounding sea.

Critics Consensus

Cold Skin exerts a strong visual pull, even if all that icy atmosphere isn't a truly satisfying substitute for a story that dares to go somewhere different.

Richard Whittaker Austin Chronicle Somehow [Gens] turns the vacation destination of Lanzarote into the ends of the Earth, and you'll feel that chill on your soul. Rated: 3/5 Sep 6, 2018 Full Review Kristy Puchko Pajiba Cold Skin doesn't have anywhere satisfying to go or anything fresh to say. Aug 1, 2018 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety The actors... invest their roles with conviction and craft, even if the story ultimately doesn't quite reward such seriousness of approach. Jul 26, 2018 Full Review Dave Golder Radio Times While the film is genuinely horrific at times, some underwhelming special effects occasionally blight the exquisite imagery. The story, too, falls flat, with few surprises and little to ultimately say about war or the human condition. Rated: 3/5 Oct 16, 2023 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed Cold Skin is a beautiful dark film that feels like it unfortunately is missing something story-wise for it all to be absolutely fascinating. The acting and practical effects show great talent ... Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 11, 2020 Full Review Víctor López G. Espinof It is doomed to lie in that limbo of productions that, despite having a good number of elements in its favor, can fall into a sad oblivion fueled by its lack of "ground". E. C Without ruining anything specific, I feel that this movie 'wants' to be more than it is. If you are seeking in-your-face action & horror, you'll likely be disappointed. (I was the 1st time I saw it.) When I watched it again, it was without those expectations, & I truly liked it. Characteristic of the 'Us v. Them' theme prevailing throughout, this story reveals the cold, dank & sometimes dreadful aspects of what it is to be human. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/24 Full Review Will S I loved it, so immersive. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review Ted B 3.5 stars; If you take "The Lighthouse" and add some horrific creatures, you'll have "Cold Skin". If that was all this was, this movie would be boring. But, some fine acting and film location created a creepy environment that made the addition of the creatures more effective. The psychosis of the characters isolated on the Lighthouse island made for an even greater spookyness. This clever combination of horror elements and character depth with human carng raised this movie way above your standard. 'scary' movie. I would also like to add, a beautiful and most appropriate musical score. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/06/23 Full Review Cristina A Didn't understand much of the movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/15/23 Full Review Sarah A The story draws you in from the start. It gets straight into the "monsters," and isn't a jumpy thriller exactly, but a harsh reality of a lonely situation for a lighthouse keeper. It's a bit creepy and disturbing, but it's a good film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/19/23 Full Review Andrew P Great theme, ambience and Lovecraftian overtones. I wished it had a little more mystery, secrets and discovery, but it was still for me, no doubt as a fan of this sort of thing, reasonably engaging, although at time pushed the boundaries of suspension of disbelief, so had to play along a little.
