Audience Member A very well made Hong Kong police thriller. The action sequences were exhilarating without being too over the top, the acting and dialogue were believable and absorbing, and there was excellent pacing that kept the story continuously moving forward. The first part of the movie concerned a power struggle within the police department unique to the Hong Kong historical perspective. Unfortunately, the internal conspiracy and external investigations became a bit convoluted, as if they were trying to compress a lot of real time and analysis into a too short film time. The ending provides a nice segue to the sequel. But with the technological advances, the city wide surveillance, how could they pull it off? A mole in the police force. Not only that, the task force operation is at each other's throats, Internal Affairs is all over everyone, and everyone is a suspect. Cold War is pure pulp, but its fun pulp that takes itself just seriously enough to be taut and thrilling. That ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, but its okay because they finally got around to making a sequel. In a time where traditional Hong Kong cop movie is seen less and less, it is a breath of fresh air to see a film like Cold War to feature a predominantly local cast. The film itself is suspenseful and filled with good acting by almost the entire crew. Also liked that it is ambitious enough to insert a teaser for the next film at the end. You just know it when something is good. Cold War is for once however, a cop conspiracy that knows not to throw in too many twists, and for that, its a quality addition to the genre.
