      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

For viewers who manage to stay invested in its occasionally aimless story, Cold Weather proves a surprisingly sophisticated blend of mumblecore and indie noir.

aaron g Interesting to see parts of Portland represented in film, but characters weren't compelling, mumbled on about uninteresting things while minimally acting. Couldn't get through it, just didn't care why his listless ex disappeared... probably just too bored, much like the audience. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Hardly worth it. Positive: The characters are well developed. Despite it's slow pace, I found myself interested enough in them to want to see what was next. Negative: A story line that promises something, but never delivers. The big finale was b-ll sh-t. The girlfriends situation made no sense and was rushed through on purpose because the writers couldn't come up with anything. So they copped out with a pull-the-plug ending. Gimme a break - phoney styling. Suddenly the credits come up and all I thought was "oh well, another movie that went nowhere". I understand that wrapping a story up like this can be difficult, but they needed to do better. Big disappointment. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Serge L Film is very ordinary life. It is comical, slow comedy of every day, and reminding my teenage years. Then his ex disappears, they find her, and then I lost track because I started watching something else at the same time. The ending is strange, as if they got back at the bad guys. Stole the luggage. I don't think we know what is inside by the end. I hope to find out more from the reviews so that I don't need to watch the last parts, where I got distracted. I have more seuthing happening in my real life. Stupid mobsters... Scott Foundas Film Comment Magazine Katz here shows himself to also be one of the few American directors of his generation (he is 29) with a strong sense of composition and movement, sound design as suspense, landscape as character. Jun 20, 2013 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader The result is pretty entertaining, though most of that entertainment derives from Katz's skillful exploitation of gumshoe formula. Dec 13, 2011 Full Review Philip French Guardian There are a few good moments. But not enough to make the journey necessary or justify the abrupt ending. Apr 17, 2011 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Cold Weather is visually attractive, but dramatically bare. [Full review in Spanish] Oct 5, 2022 Full Review Molly Templeton Eugene Weekly (OR) Cold Weather is more formally lovely than any mumblecore film I've yet seen (and I do have a modest taste for the genre, if you can really call it that). Feb 27, 2019 Full Review John Powers NPR's Fresh Air [Director] Aaron Katz... may not have much money to work with but has everything else - a sly sense of humor, a light touch with relationships, and a keen sense of visual beauty. These virtues are all on display in this dreamy shape-shifter of a picture. May 17, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews
