Alexandra Heller-Nicholas AWFJ.org Cold Wind Blowing has all the elements of a really solid low-budget indie horror that thoroughly deserves its second chance; hopefully, genre fest programmers and other critics will not let this one slide into oblivion. Mar 31, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Like giving a deer head and a camera to teenagers and telling them to make a horror film. The drama was so cringy it almost turned comedy - until you remembered that they were actually trying to act scared of the bony creature outside the cabin. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Andy B An overlong and poorly paced student film with acting that veers from passable to downright appalling. Almost an hour is spent on setup which adds little and could have been done more effectively in half the time, after which the 'monster' (a bird skull on a stick which mercilessly pecks at it's victims) aimlessly terrorizes the bickering cast through a bewildering variety of senseless decisions. The finale is the usual no budget horror routine of having the heroine beat the ground with an axe and scream whilst the crew frantically throw buckets of ketchup at nearby trees. Cutting the first two words off the title would have at least served as a warning. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/27/23 Full Review Audience Member There are so few modern horror movies that have both a love for the genre and a desire to do something new with it but writer-director Dionne Copland delivers a film that excels in every regard. From the fantastic performances that get you to ACTUALLY care about the characters to the amazingly crafted horror set-pieces, Cold Wind Blowing is the REAL DEAL. I don't make comparisons to a classic like The Evil Dead lightly, but the way that Copland really reinvents the wheel here with her storytelling and the way that she decides to present the horror is nothing short of amazing. There is one scene involving a closed door that is probably one of my favourite horror movie moments from recent memory. This is female-driven horror at its finest, with a beautiful story about slaying one's own demons and with a few queer undertones sprinkled throughout. I can't think of anything better in recent memory that truly felt like the NEXT THING in horror, but Copland does more than enough to prove that she is one of THE most exciting filmmakers starting in horror today. This film will not be for everyone, but if you "get it" and ACTUALLY like horror movies for the right reasons then you will find A LOT to love about Cold Wind Blowing.
