Will Self London Evening Standard Cruise lacked the deepdown malevolence required to bring Vincent to life. I wished him dead in the first few minutes he was on the screen -- and for the wrong reasons. Jan 8, 2018 Full Review Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com A visually striking film from the unhinged, endlessly creative mind of Michael Mann. It was one of the best films of that year and boasts plenty of great qualities, including the excellent work by Cruise and Foxx. Rare T Collateral is one of the few movies that never left my mind after the first watch, and I ended up watching again years later. The plot is embroidered with action-rich events and twists, while Michael Mann’s ingenuity seals the deal, especially with his use of digital cameras that enrich the 2004-vibes experience, in addition to the great soundtrack. Similarities can be drawn to many older classics. The chemistry between Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise (and relationship between their characters) can be compared to that between Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte in 48 Hrs. (1982) or even Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in Heat (1995). The relationship between Jamie Foxx and Jada Pinkett Smith’s characters can be compared to that between James Stewart and Grace Kelly in Rear Window (1954). Additionally, this whole erratic experience of being dragged into something against one’s will, while at the same time being paradoxically pleasant to watch, is like a tribute to After Hours (1982). Mann really knew how to pay respect to the greats who came before him. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Frank C A fun ride, Action , humor , sarcasm, and saving the world Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review Bill W Tom Cruise best movie awesome. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/12/24 Full Review Audience Member I was really loving this, and then the last 20 minutes turned into Hollywood bullshit. It would have been so much better if Max just drove Vincent around all night in ambiguity. Of course Vincent would have to have killed Max in the end. The movie is illogical in so many ways, but I loved the mood, Cruise's performance, the soundtrack, LA at night, etc. New noir. And, Jamie, get some Malcom X glasses for god sake. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Wayne K Every now and then you stumble on a little gem of a movie that perhaps you’d never even heard of, or had seen a few clips of but never got around to actually watching. The latter was true for me when I decided to give Collateral a watch. After it was over my wife said to me ‘They don’t make films like this anymore’, and it’s a sentiment I have to agree with. In an age where so many major films become a battleground for whatever social, cultural or political issue happens to be trending at the time, Collateral is like a relic from a bygone age; a tight, well-structured, heart pounding thriller that builds to an explosive climax, but also takes the time to develop its characters, create a wider story around their situation and introduce other players that have a part to play in the grand scheme of things. Cruise gives easily one of his best but also most underrated performances as a contract killer that’s abrasive, charming and utterly ruthless. There’s a palpable sense of menace from him, and when he’s not giving his decidedly nihilistic take on LA life and culture, he’s taking out his targets with brutal efficiency. You can see how much preparation Cruise did for the role and it really pays off. Foxx is the character that changes the most, starting as an honest, down to earth but meek and submissive cab driver, steadily learning not only to stand up for himself, but to improvise and think his way out of dangerous situations. It’s slickly directed by the great Michael Mann, and so propulsive that the 2 hour runtime just flies by. There some moments that strain credulity, and make you question the validity of Cruise’s position as a professional hitman, considering some of the amateur mistakes and decisions he makes, but nothing is enough to detract from just how exciting, smart and engaging the entire film is. It took me a while to get to it, but I’m so thankful that I eventually did. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/24/24 Full Review Read all reviews
