David M I'm usually a Columbo fan, but the writers were phoning it in during this episode: the murder plot barely exists, and the producers managed to burn off a lot of screen time simply with Falk hamming it up through standard set pieces as the American tourist in London. It feels more like a Christmas special than a regular episode (and I don't mean that in a good way-the episode even refers to the British tradition of silly Christmas pantos, probably as a bit of hidden writers' rebellion). Poor Bernard Fox is stuck playing an idiotic Captain-Blimp style foil to Falk's predictably boorish-but-clever American. While on an official visit to Scotland Yard to review their policing methods, Lt. Columbo helps out on the case of a famous theater producer who was murdered. Bond Girl Honor Blackman (aka Pussy Galore) gives an excellent performance that has a lot of weight to it. And, the writing does a good job at using the established formula of the series while also changing it by taking Columbo out of L.A. and having him shadow the official London inspector in charge of the case. Additionally, there are some fun pieces of comedy with Columbo playing tourist. Breaking convention, Dagger of the Mind is an impressive and refreshing new take on the Columbo murder mystery.
