What to Know

Critics Consensus

Decades after its predecessor joked about the fine line between love and nausea, Coming 2 America reminds audiences that there's an equally fine line between sequel and retread.

Audience Says

It isn't totally without laughs, but a lazy reliance on callbacks and a story that rehashes the first film make this sequel a letdown.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk It’s hard to actively dislike Coming 2 America: sometimes, you just need to have a silly time with a silly movie. Rated: 3/5 Sep 23, 2024 Full Review Michael Blackmon BuzzFeed News The sequel to the 1988 hit is not without its problems, but it's still mostly fun. Dec 17, 2021 Full Review Kevin Maher The Times (UK) It's lazy, barrel-scraping cinema at its worst. Rated: 1/5 Mar 13, 2021 Full Review Terry Staunton Radio Times While the succession subplot does its best to redress the dated gender politics of the original film, it gets lost in the parade of broad, simplistic gags that only intermittently land with any confidence. Rated: 2/5 Mar 21, 2025 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net After the brilliant and heartwarming DOLEMITE IS MY NAME, I had higher expectations from director Craig Brewer and Murphy. They make a great team, but the material just isn’t there this time. Rated: 2/5 Jul 13, 2024 Full Review Shawn Edwards Fox 4 Kansas City Eddie Murphy is a genius, the original is arguably the funniest movie ever made...not a bad movie, but more nostalgic than funny, a cinematic greatest hits package...surprisingly heart-felt, and the fans won't mind the films flaws... Peter C Pretty similar to the first film, in a good way. But if you don’t enjoy Tracy Morgan playing the only character he ever plays in anything then be prepared to fast forward often Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/29/25 Full Review Stephen C A failure in 1 hour and 49 minutes. The worst of Eddie Murphy, James Earl Jones and Arsenio Hall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/01/25 Full Review Kevin P A decent sequel that's charming to revisit, but falls into the same traps as most modern legacy sequels. The returning character bits are fun, but the Leslie Jones and Jermaine Fowler subplot is a mixed bag, with some weird dialogue where characters announce their emotions and melodramatic. The movie also falls into the legacy sequel trap by regressing Akeem's character arc with the excuse of "Oh now he became his father so we can repeat the plot of the original movie with a daddy issues twist". There's also an uncomfortable nonconsensual original to Akeem's parentage that's played for laughs and never addressed. And sadly Lisa doesn’t have much to do this time aside from just being the naggy wife stereotype. That being said, it was really nice of the movie to being back so much of the retuning cast members from the original film, both big and small names. It's touching that this got to be James Earl Jones' final film role (with a great scene at his pre-show funeral). The cameos were also nice, and it's nice that the movie chooses to spend more time in Zamunda instead of just repeating the "Oh No we don't understand New York" plot again. It's not great, but it's fairly entertaining if you're a fan of the original. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/03/25 Full Review Chris B I am watching it for the second time. Much better appreciation on the move songs and themes. It's not meant to be complex just enjoyed. On par with the first for sure and the way Eddie plays the different characters is second to none. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Js S One reason and one reason only Eddie Murphy did this film....$$$$$$$ . abysmal, 99% of films should never be remade decade+ later Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review alan g The original was fun. This one was dreadful. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Read all reviews
