John P The best of the Montalbano series. It shows well the relationship between Salvo Montalbano and his team, and also between Salvo and his long-term girlfriend Livia who lives in the north of Italy, and also between Salvo and the criminal and Mafis persons known to him. Montalbano survives being shot, but has a long period of convalescence which allows him to follow up on the mystery of a cave he had discovered earlier which contains a terracotta dog and two skeletons and placed in a way reminiscent of the Legend of the Seven Sleepers. I wouldn't class this as a thriller or action episode. It is much more interesting than that as the gradual uncovering of clues to the mystery.
