Harry B Underrated thriller featuring standout performances by Charles Boyer and Peter Lorre. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/20/23 Full Review Gerard A Overall a well done spy thriller that was unfortunately a victim of poor timing. The U.S. public's interest in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) was long eclipsed by the immediacy of WWII by the time of the movie's release in 1945. Insert Humphrey Bogart as a U.S. Ex-Pat spy for the French Resistance in place of Charles Boyer as the Spanish loyalist spy and interest in the film then and now would have been greater. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/12/23 Full Review Roger J Not very good. Ridiculous plot... perhaps the book was better.. Bad acting. Bacall has made far better movies. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty good adaptation of Graham Greene novel, true to original feeling, written at end of the Spanish Civil War when the threat of fascists in Spain and Germany was manifest. High quality casting, with Charles Boyer capturing the desperation of a Spanish Republican agent. Lauren Bacall is better than reviewed at the time since the role was not written to emphasize her talent or appeal a la the film To Have and Have Not. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review s r It has its moments with Bacall tempting and Boyer trying to survive, but its not a great spy movie that will be remembered well. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A most bizarre set of characters in a most unlikely plot. Bacall as good as ever. Boyer's character just very odd. Entertaining.
