Critics Consensus

Mired in campy visual effects and charmless characters, Congo is a suspenseless adventure that betrays little curiosity about the scientific concepts it purports to care about.

Lisa Schwarzbaum Entertainment Weekly Rated: D- Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Brian Lowry Variety Feels as if the picture were edited to leave the action sequences in while removing any connecting material that might have helped them make sense. Jun 17, 2008 Full Review Stephen Garrett Time Out Dreadfully muddled, but mildly diverting. Feb 9, 2006 Full Review Brian Orndorf Blu-ray.com The gorilla chiller is clunky, campy, and strangely ineffective when summoning big screen thrills. Rated: C Feb 26, 2025 Full Review Justin Brown Medium Popcorn This is ridiculously entertaining. However it's also a complete mess with wild action set pieces and performances. Rated: 3/5 Aug 30, 2024 Full Review Brandon Collins Medium Popcorn This is one of my favorite messiest films ever. Between Tim Curry's unhinged performance, the insane relationship between Amy and Peter, and Laura Linney being a badass, what's not to love about this?? They don't make wild movies like this anymore. Rated: 5/5 Aug 30, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Jono L I actually liked this movie when I saw it as a kid. So I still have a soft spot for it. Yeah, it's ridiculous in all aspects but I think a remake could do it justice.. With a better director.. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review J J In the year 2025, Congo actually aged well considering the over-hyped and politically driven garbage we see getting pumped out today (e.g. A Mine Craft Movie, Disney's Snow White etc.). If Sinners, yet another black power movie, gets a 99% for having Michael Jordan's son star in it with a lead role, then Congo should have a 100% for having Bruce Campell do a cameo. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/06/25 Full Review Jens B Highlights: "The Lion King" opening creepy tickle-me Amy Tim Curry's accent (and scarf) Herkermer Homolka eating cake – military guy: STOP EATING MY SESAME CAKE!! 😡 Laura Linney casually shooting down rockets with a gun Gorilla parachuting "California Dreaming" sing-a-long a lot of gorilla carnage Laura Linney exploding a satellite via diamond laser power, only using the satellite's phone number 🤷🏼‍♂️ -- I'll give it that: "Congo" is much more fun (and shorter) to watch than "The Lost World: Jurassic Park". Cheesy/insane jungle adventure extravaganza! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/28/25 Full Review Brad S. R This is not a great film by any stretch of the imagination, but there are enough quirky characters, humor, adventure, and surprisingly exciting action to make this very '90s techno thriller worth the watch—you just have to embrace the absurdity a little. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Audience Member As a kid who enjoyed the novel, I was pumped that they were going to make a film adaptation. Then it came out and it became a running joke amongst me and my friends. I’m sure if I watched it again as an adult, I’d still be disappointed. I think I really only enjoyed the scene where the motion sensor machine guns start going haywire. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/06/25 Full Review Kelly Ann W Fun movie, the scenery that is supposed to be the Congo which is actually Belize is absolutely stunning. It's a neat fantasy movie. The acting is a great with Ernie and questionable with others but you can say the same for almost any movie nowadays. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Read all reviews
