Critics Consensus

Mired in campy visual effects and charmless characters, Congo is a suspenseless adventure that betrays little curiosity about the scientific concepts it purports to care about.

Lisa Schwarzbaum Entertainment Weekly Rated: D- Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Brian Lowry Variety Feels as if the picture were edited to leave the action sequences in while removing any connecting material that might have helped them make sense. Jun 17, 2008 Full Review Stephen Garrett Time Out Dreadfully muddled, but mildly diverting. Feb 9, 2006 Full Review Justin Brown Medium Popcorn This is ridiculously entertaining. However it's also a complete mess with wild action set pieces and performances. Rated: 3/5 Aug 30, 2024 Full Review Brandon Collins Medium Popcorn This is one of my favorite messiest films ever. Between Tim Curry's unhinged performance, the insane relationship between Amy and Peter, and Laura Linney being a badass, what's not to love about this?? They don't make wild movies like this anymore. Jay W "Congo" has an infamous reputation as a train wreck of a movie. I went in knowing the movie was likely going to be awful but was sadly surprised that it wasn't the over the top enjoyable bad I was looking for. The movie makes the unforgivable sin of introducing Bruce Campbell, only to do nothing with his character. Throughout the movie, I kept thinking, where's Bruce? But they helped make up for it by include Ernie Hudson and Tim Curry. Tim Curry is an absolute delight, he steals every scene he is in. He is speaking in a crazy accent, rambling off nonsense and is obsessed with diamonds. He helps make this movie memorable. Stan Winston does the costumes in this movie. And yes, it is obvious that they are not actual gorillas they are just people in suits. It can take you out of the scene every time they cut to these gorilla costumes. There is one character, who dies of fright in this movie. The actor that plays it, gives 110% to his performance. It is shot and delivered in such a way, that it is one of the most hilarious death scenes I've ever seen. Humor isn't what the director had in mind for the scene, but it is hilarious none the less. The rest of the movie is just your basic Jungle B-Movie affair. What makes the movie feel so hollow is by the end, I can't tell you a single thing any character learned or how any character changed. I guess Dr. Karen Ross learned her boss was a jerk, but that was painfully obvious to everyone. Everyone just went to the jungle, hi-jinx ensued, and then they leave. I think the reason it is looked back upon with such shame is because of all the wasted potential. As Bruce Campbell pointed out, on paper this movie has all the right ingredients. It has Jerry Goldsmith music, is has Stan Winston doing special effects, it has great actors and it is based on a Michael Creighton book. I'm sure producers thought after "Jurassic Park" was a big hit in '93, and Lion King's success in '94, they had a slam dunk with a Michael Creighton story based in Africa. But they were then disappointed once the box office rolled in, and audiences were disappointed when all they got was "Congo". Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Thirdi A Pure nostalgia. Talking gorillas, lost temple ruins, lasers, diamonds, violent gorilla gangs, lava - everything you could want from an action movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/20/24 Full Review Michael H This movie is bad in all the best ways, it takes me back to a less discerning thirteen year old me who adored it. Highly recommend for the 90s nostalgia Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review Jon G Campy and dumb but also kind of enjoyable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/12/24 Full Review Alec B Enormously dumb and yet it does have a certain enduring appeal in how it reworked "King Solomon's Mines" for the 1990s. Also Laura Linney uses a diamond powered laser gun in one scene, which is why we go to the movies. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review Clinton M One of my favorite films from my childhood. Just pure entertaining fun. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews
