BadNews R @TheMovieSearch Sep 8 Going into C.O.R.N: A Field of Screams, I’ll admit my expectations weren’t sky high—the poster alone looked cheap and poorly designed—but I still held out hope that maybe, just maybe, it would be one of those hidden indie horror gems that surprises you. Unfortunately, that hope didn’t last long. The film falls flat almost immediately, and instead of gaining momentum as it unfolds, it just drags itself deeper into disappointment. The biggest issue here is the writing. The script feels unpolished, like a first draft that no one ever revised. The story opens with tension between the stepfather and the kids, but it’s done in such a rushed, aggressive way that it doesn’t feel believable. They’re immediately hostile to one another, which makes it difficult to invest in their dynamic or root for them as the story moves forward. Instead of layering conflict and building relationships, the movie throws forced arguments and shallow dialogue at the audience without any real payoff. That’s not to say everything about the film is a complete disaster. The acting itself isn’t terrible—in fact, a few of the performers really do try to bring authenticity to their roles. The problem is, even solid acting can’t save a weak script or a clumsy narrative. When the foundation is shaky, the whole thing crumbles, and that’s exactly what happens here. What frustrates me the most is that there was potential. The setup—a mysterious and sinister presence tied to a rural cornfield—could have been genuinely creepy if handled with more care. With tighter storytelling, sharper dialogue, and better pacing, this could have been a small but effective horror film. Instead, it feels undercooked, underdeveloped, and ultimately forgettable. At times, I found myself thinking about my own experiences writing scripts. When you look back at an early draft, you often see all the missed opportunities and weak spots that need to be reworked before it’s ready for an audience. Unfortunately, this movie feels like no one ever gave it that necessary polish. In the end, C.O.R.N: A Field of Screams isn’t unwatchable—it’s just painfully mediocre. It lacks the creativity, suspense, and execution needed to make an impression, and it left me more frustrated than entertained. It’s not a movie I’ll ever revisit or recommend, because it simply never finds its footing.
