What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though some may find it cold and didactic, Cosmopolis benefits from David Cronenberg's precise direction, resulting in a psychologically complex adaptation of Don DeLillo's novel.

Philippa Snow New Statesman Cosmopolis is exhilarating in two ways. The first is that it offers up the soothing image of a billionaire capitalist brought to heel by riots. The second is that Pattinson's work as Packer. Jul 8, 2020 Full Review Noah Berlatsky The Atlantic Cosmopolis, based on the Don DeLillo novel, is less forthright and substantially less enjoyable, but the same general themes are recognizably in place. Aug 28, 2019 Full Review J. Hoberman ARTINFO.com Cosmopolis is as an exercise in outlandish dialogue and bone-dry humor, a contemporary allegory that is also a sustained riff on the idea of a virtual world. Jun 15, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Cronenberg has not made a commercial piece of cinema overly concerned with making money here; this is a work of art whose brushstrokes are masterfully crafted, intricate, sometimes distancing, and nothing short of fascinating. Rated: 4/4 Oct 3, 2022 Full Review Erick Estrada Cinegarage Halfway between the postmodern novel and a movie in the style of a role-playing videogame, [Cosmopolis] is only worth it because of its final chapter... a Cronenbergian debate that though delicious, it arrives too late. Rolf J Wat een saaie film .wat te doen tijdens de film ? B film Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/30/23 Full Review Mum L I was curious about this film as Delillo was a popular author. I could not get into the movie at all. I struggled through, hoping I would find something redeemable. By the end all I could think of was watching poop go down the toilet drain in slow motion. Sorry. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/07/23 Full Review Milo M It's definitely surreal, for better or for worse, but you know right away that it's a Cronenberg film—albeit the strangest work Cronenberg's done, and that's saying something! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/07/23 Full Review Gareth v Cronenberg is back to his obscure, out there ways but with this movie we just get a dull and exhaustive mess. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/23 Full Review David W Steeped in symbolism and metaphor, this is a film that likely requires multiple viewings to truly understand its complexity. The pacing is solid and the progression works well for a film mostly set inside the back of a limo. I would definitely watch this again. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/24 Full Review dave s Credit to David Cronenberg for attempting to adapt Don DeLillo's seemingly unadaptable novel Cosmopolis for the big screen. The story is simple enough – young billionaire Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson) travels across Manhattan in the back of a limousine in search of a haircut, encountering social unrest and engaging in meetings with those who impact his life along the way. Over the course of his journey, he is able to justify his capitalist ideals by applying principles of philosophy and art to the free enterprise system. It is well-executed by Cronenberg, Pattinson does a respectable job as the stone-faced narcissist, and Paul Giamatti is brilliant in the final scene as the man intent on killing Packer, but there are times when the dialogue becomes overbearing and more than a little pretentious, never a good thing in a visual medium.
