Mata, Missy and Makareta. Three cousins. Three lives. Separated by circumstances, yet bound together by blood. Orphaned Mata believes she has no whanau and lives out her lonely childhood in fear and bewilderment. Back home on the land, educated Makareta flees an arranged marriage to study law and begin the search for her missing cousin. She leaves behind cheeky yet dutiful Missy who takes on her role of kaitiaki (guardian) of the land. As the years pass, loss of the family land seems imminent and the women's promise to bring their stolen cousin home seems more unlikely than ever, until a chance encounter changes everything.

A sprawling story of separation and disposession which feels both intimate in terms of its setting and epic in resonance. Go to Full Review

A lovely, moving tribute to the unbreakable ties that love makes, created by some of the best female filmmakers in world film. Te Ao Māori, or the Māori world view, suffuses Cousins. Go to Full Review

Amy P Aug 28 I really wanted to like Cousins, but it just didn’t work for me. The story had potential, but the way it was told felt drawn out and uneven. A lot of scenes dragged on without adding much to the plot, while the emotional moments didn’t land as strongly as they should have. The characters never felt fully developed, so it was hard to connect with them or care about what happened. Visually it was fine, but nothing stood out. Overall, it felt more like a slow, confusing drama than a movie that leaves a real impact. In the end, it was a shite movie. See more Jeremy S 11/12/2023 Important and worthy movie showing the mistreatment of the Maoris through a human tale. Wish it had gripped me more than it did See more Peter W 09/19/2023 Cousins will undoubtedly touch the hearts of many movie lovers, whether due to the solid and unforgettable performances from the actors or the story and journey on-screen, and this film does leave something inside its audience. Pacing is slightly questionable as the film cuts back and forth from past and present, making it somewhat challenging to keep track of characters. No matter, there is an enjoyable strength here reminding us about family and love that will please many. See more Kate 02/03/2023 Stunning, emotional, must watch See more 06/01/2022 The plot is confusing due to the frequent flashbacks and the amount of information left for the audience to guess. For example, how did Mata end up being homeless? According to the movie, she spent approximately 30 years on the streets, but I wonder how many people manage to spend such a period as a homeless person, especially keeping her green coat as sparkling clean and new as when it was first given to her by her ex-husband. My main concern is, nevertheless, Mata's dumbness. I cannot believe that there is anywhere such as a doltish, naive and passive person. It is especially annoying that she allowed her guardian to take advantage of her until her late twenties. Later, she ruined what could have been a prolific marriage by not being able to sustain sexual relations with her husband or openly communicate with him. Finally, how Mata and Makareta found each other is a clear example of simplifying the plot, so the movie has a quick end. The two cousins, Mata and Makareta, spent all their lives in Wellington, and just before Makareta was about to return to her land to inform her family about her lethal illness, she accidentally bumped into Mata at a pedestrian cross in Wellington, that easy! See more 04/13/2022 Beautiful and confronting. A rare look into Māori culture and the effects of removing one's culture. Symbolic to the effects of colonisation in Aotearoa See more Read all reviews
