What to Know

Critics Consensus

Crazy Samurai: 400 vs 1 has a certain brutal effectiveness, but its heavily action-dependent approach makes it difficult to care about what's happening onscreen.

Steve Rose Guardian Most viewers will tire out long before this Crazy Samurai does. Rated: 2/5 Jun 30, 2021 Full Review Carson Timar Filmotomy For those who love samurai action films and dont need a ton of character or story to captivate them, this is probably going to be butter on their bread. Feb 12, 2022 Full Review David G. Hughes electric ghost Crazy Samurai is, up until now, the pinnacle of this undesirable and artless trend in single-take action filmmaking. It displays very little authorial shaping of reality. Yet its sui generis excess wore me down and then won me over. Jun 27, 2021 Full Review James Mudge easternKicks.com Mainly for hardcore action fans or filmmakers interested in staging fight scenes and in experimenting with the form, and for them the film is definitely worth catching Rated: 3/5 Mar 5, 2021 Full Review John Serba Decider Crazy Samurai is not only boring, but empty too. Mar 4, 2021 Full Review Sean Gilman The Chinese Cinema An experimental action film more admirable for its tenacity and the stamina of its star, Tak Sakaguchi, than its choreographic pyrotechnics. Paul P So much fun. People watch other people play video games and this is that with as few cuts as possible. Love it. Makes a great drinking game lol Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/02/24 Full Review Audience Member The only reason this is getting half a star is for the ending, that’s literally it. The entire film was just a bunch of idiots spamming the same 3 moves over and over again and Musashi kills them. The sad part is, this film has a place in cinema history now for being the first to do something this ambitious. If you are a Cinephile or just have insane tolerance don’t watch this garbage. Almost no story to speak of also. He also just keeps finding water and food laying around, like everywhere? And when he is tired no one attacks to take advantage of him during a moment of weakness??? THESE ARE NNOT WARRIORS. This movie is unironically a disgrace to my eyeballs and anyone else who has the misfortune of watching this. .5/5 stars, if I could give it a -1 I would. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/18/24 Full Review Devin C Great movie I randomly watched it on tubi and man they literally fight the entire movie. Great samurai techniques no wasted movement in his attacks Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/28/24 Full Review Dan D While this movie was terrible, it is the closest I've seen to a live-action video game. It had rest points, similar NPCs in every fight scene that die senselessly, occasional boss fights, weapon upgrades and aimless wandering by the protagonist. Bad movie but a pretty good "video game". Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/28/23 Full Review Tiberius R If you're into unique film experiences, this is worth your time. Why they don't play up the monumental skill and endurance of an 80 minute continuous fight scene is beyond me. Kudos to everyone on this project. A fresh perspective on a classic theme! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Yet another movie where its entire claim to fame is "Look, it's all done in one shot!" Why is everyone so obsessed with one shot takes now in action movies now? I don't care how many takes a scene has as long as it looks good. Besides, Hard Boiled had a long one shot take back in 1992 so this is hardly new. and there is nothing going for this movie aside from that gimmick, and that's all it is. A gimmick. I LOVE action and samurai movies and I was bored of this halfway into it. If you want a recent samurai film that's actually good, go check out Choi Jae-Hoon's The Swordsman.
