Critics Consensus

Creed II's adherence to franchise formula adds up to a sequel with few true surprises, but its time-tested generational themes still pack a solid punch.

Andrea Gronvall Chicago Reader Battle fatigue sets in roughly halfway through this eighth installment of Sylvester Stallone's Rocky franchise. Feb 22, 2020 Full Review David Sims The Atlantic Creed II fits the mold of every Rocky sequel-competent, entertaining, and a little passionless Dec 21, 2018 Full Review Brooke Obie Shadow and Act There's... so much to enjoy in Creed II. Dec 6, 2018 Full Review Max Greene InSession Film Yes, Creed II is a boxing film. Yes, it is a story that we have seen played out at least seven previous times. But there is so much more under the surface, and that is where Creed II shines. Rated: B+ Aug 1, 2024 Full Review Calum Cooper Source (Scotland) Watching the characters struggle to manage the consequences of the past with the responsibilities of the future is both interesting and dramatic. Rated: 3/5 Jul 14, 2024 Full Review Denise Pieniazek Metacultura (AR) In conclusion, Creed II is a solid film with a convincing performance of Michael B. Jordan who asserts himself in the character. This sequel is what the fans expected, but it must be admitted that it provides few innovative elements. Rated: 7/10 Dec 28, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Daniel N Not as good as the first one but still entertaining. Bringing back Drago and putting a new spin on it was great fun. Really good writing. Stallone really tapped into the nostalgia of Rocky 4. Didn't like Adonis as much in this one. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Shaun R I did not know what to expect as the Rocky franchise is my favourite film franchise. I wasn’t let down as this is a good movie, although, has there ever been a more predictable outcome in movie history? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/17/24 Full Review Jay W On paper, there is no reason why this movie should work. This is the 8th entry of a franchise about boxing. The story is about the son of the villain of the 4th movie coming to fight the son of the villain from the 1st movie. The premise sounds like lazy fan fiction. But dang it all, they did it again, this movie is one of very best. I likewise went into the previous "Creed" movie skeptical. But I was blown away by how much heart that movie was able to have. It brought "the feels" harder than ANY of the previous movies and that is no small feat. I LOVED "Creed", but believe it or not, I like "Creed II" even more. One critique I had with the previous film was the "villain" of the story. There wasn't much to him, he wasn't very interesting, and I did not buy him as a legitimate threat against Adonis. They kept saying "greatest pound for pound fighter" but the guy looked less ripped than Michael B. Jordan. And I know, the actor playing "Pretty Ricky" was a real-life boxing champ. But he did not look intimidating and didn't bring much to the table as an actor. This movie fixes that. Viktor Drago is an absolute beast. He is a mountain of a man that made me fear for Adonis. And Florian Munteanu, the actor playing Viktor, can really sell both the physical and emotional beats of the character. His eyes may be his greatest asset, he is able to sell an emotion with just a look. Dolph also brought his A-Game for his scenes. Ivan and Viktor don't steal the show, because there is a lot of good going on. But every time they came on screen, I was instantly engaged. Some may ask: how can a movie about boxing do anything new by its 8th entry? "Creed II" finds a way. There are some simple camera tricks that they do in the fight cinematography that I am shocked that this is the first in the franchise to do. The movie also doesn't focus as much on the "training montages" and getting stronger physically to beat your opponent, but more on the emotional and physiological aspect of the game. Admittedly in a "Sports Movie" there are only a finite number of things that may occur. It will either be win, lose or draw, on that level yes, this stuff has been done before. But if you are breaking things down that simply you have already given up having joy in any journey. Every character in this film has a moment to shine and they nail it. Tessa Thompson as Bianca, Phylicia Rashad as Mary Ann, even Wood Harris as Little Duke, all have dramatic, interesting and plot relevant things to do. Stallone as Rocky still got it, and packs as much punch emotionally as ever. Have your tissue boxes at the ready for this one. Every "Rocky" movie is written and presented as if it is going to be the last of the series, and then they make a sequel. And somehow this franchise has become the most consistent place to go to for quality characters and story telling. If they were to end the series here, I would be perfectly satisfied. But then again, if they continue to make the films at this quality, sign me up for 10 more. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Stephen H Dang good sequel. DRAGO! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Kevin C Creed 2 is a good sequel. After a knockout by Victor Drago, Rocky helps Creed train to defeat Drago on his own turf. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/05/24 Full Review Cfunk D Lame movie. Creed should have lost. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/23/24 Full Review Read all reviews
