Audience Member 75% Crimson Bat isn't as outrageous in an exploitation/chanbara way as you might expect. In fact it's much more serious. It tells a very dramatic, sappy, and slightly over-convoluted story with many subplots which is contrary to what you might be expecting, considering the proverbial cover of this book. But there is still lots of fun bloody action which will satisfy any chanbara fan. The visual style is also engaging, but there's not much else to keep the film interesting. The bad dubbing and acting and the shameless ripoff of Zatoichi doesn't help either. But overall, the film is an enjoyable bout in the chanbara genre.
