After marrying the charming and seductive Sir Thomas Sharpe, young Edith (Mia Wasikowska) finds herself swept away to his remote gothic mansion in the English hills. Also living there is Lady Lucille, Thomas' alluring sister and protector of her family's dark secrets. Able to communicate with the dead, Edith tries to decipher the mystery behind the ghostly visions that haunt her new home. As she comes closer to the truth, Edith may learn that true monsters are made of flesh and blood.

What [Guillermo] del Toro had in mind when shooting Crimson Peak was probably a stylish gothic period piece in the same acclaimed lane as Pan's Labyrinth. Unfortunately, Crimson Peak fails to work on that level.

Chastain, Wasikowska, and Hiddleston do their best, but the writing of “Crimson Peak“ comes off far more slight than Del Toro’s previous work. It lives in the shadow of similar films, but with a far more unrelieved energy.

This is a goth horror movie that is reminiscent of Hammer and other old timey studios, it’s goth horror that knows how to build a few scares, but mainly how to build attachments to the characters to make you feel their plight.

It was a deception. I feel sad because it could have been much better, but I smell that Guillermo del Toro was constrained by trying to appeal to a broader audience. They put their bet on a soap opera-like melodrama that just feels cheesy

I absolutely love this movie. I do think that some of the negative reviews come from people who thought this was a "scary" horror movie. Some have criticized the plot but I think its plot is as good as any other plot. It's about the people and there just happen to be ghosts. There could have been more to the plot but the sum of it all makes me want to give it 5 stars. It has to be 5 stars as I just saw it over the weekend and want to see it again. If you are interested in a gothic romance, something more along the lines of House of Usher (perhaps) then this one could be for you. I think the performances are great, the set/lighting are brilliant.

The plot is generic without anything surprising or special but mysterious enough to hold attention. The visuals are where this thrives with set design, colors, & lighting all looking absolutely beautiful. The atmosphere is also brilliant with the creepy gothic fairly tale tone working very well. Unique in its scares & violence yet I wish there was more of them. For better or worse, this is a pure del Toro film that is overacted, underwhelming, & a bit redundant on its execution.
