After marrying the charming and seductive Sir Thomas Sharpe, young Edith (Mia Wasikowska) finds herself swept away to his remote gothic mansion in the English hills. Also living there is Lady Lucille, Thomas' alluring sister and protector of her family's dark secrets. Able to communicate with the dead, Edith tries to decipher the mystery behind the ghostly visions that haunt her new home. As she comes closer to the truth, Edith may learn that true monsters are made of flesh and blood.

What [Guillermo] del Toro had in mind when shooting Crimson Peak was probably a stylish gothic period piece in the same acclaimed lane as Pan's Labyrinth. Unfortunately, Crimson Peak fails to work on that level.

Chastain, Wasikowska, and Hiddleston do their best, but the writing of “Crimson Peak“ comes off far more slight than Del Toro’s previous work. It lives in the shadow of similar films, but with a far more unrelieved energy.

No matter how hard I tried I just couldn't get into this one. Del Toro seems to be such a hit or miss director for me and this is one of his misses.

If you believe style IS substance, and you admire gothic style, there's plenty for you to enjoy here. For me, the Jane Eyre inspired/rip-off romance didn't take and the style couldn't rescue it.

This is my all time favorite movie. The characters are so realistic in how they behave it makes you a lot more attached to them and the story. Has a very good twist. Would rewatch this movie again and again.

Beautiful Victorian gothic tale of forbidden love, betrayal, heartache, despair and triumph. I would’ve loved to see Edith’s character after Allerdale and how her life turned out. I imagine she would’ve had a best selling novel 😉
