Critics Consensus

Crimson Peak offers an engaging -- albeit somewhat slight -- diversion driven by a delightfully creepy atmosphere and director Guillermo del Toro's brilliant knack for unforgettable visuals.

This is headily sumptuous, seductive filmmaking, beautiful and grotesque, with the best-realised ghosts since del Toro’s own The Devil’s Backbone (2001). Go to Full Review

What [Guillermo] del Toro had in mind when shooting Crimson Peak was probably a stylish gothic period piece in the same acclaimed lane as Pan's Labyrinth. Unfortunately, Crimson Peak fails to work on that level. Go to Full Review

Not only did I love every silly, gothic, gorgeous minute of Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak, I'm actually suspicious of those who didn't. Go to Full Review

Chastain, Wasikowska, and Hiddleston do their best, but the writing of “Crimson Peak“ comes off far more slight than Del Toro’s previous work. It lives in the shadow of similar films, but with a far more unrelieved energy. Go to Full Review

Gothic romance with notes of horror, bathed in the unreal and magical colors of a baroque Italian horror and brought to life by Guillermo Del Toro’s beating heart of compassion in the face of evil. Go to Full Review

This is a goth horror movie that is reminiscent of Hammer and other old timey studios, it’s goth horror that knows how to build a few scares, but mainly how to build attachments to the characters to make you feel their plight. Go to Full Review

M @Misery69 Nov 20 Set design was mesmerizing. Symbols of moths and butterflies were brilliantly represented. See more Gabriel T Nov 17 It was a deception. I feel sad because it could have been much better, but I smell that Guillermo del Toro was constrained by trying to appeal to a broader audience. They put their bet on a soap opera-like melodrama that just feels cheesy See more Andrew A. @rt_andrew Nov 16 handsomely made but the story didn't feel as dynamic as it could have been See more John S Nov 3 I absolutely love this movie. I do think that some of the negative reviews come from people who thought this was a "scary" horror movie. Some have criticized the plot but I think its plot is as good as any other plot. It's about the people and there just happen to be ghosts. There could have been more to the plot but the sum of it all makes me want to give it 5 stars. It has to be 5 stars as I just saw it over the weekend and want to see it again. If you are interested in a gothic romance, something more along the lines of House of Usher (perhaps) then this one could be for you. I think the performances are great, the set/lighting are brilliant. See more Lea K. @EmmaMoves9 Oct 27 I love this Gothic tale. A balance of atmosphere and style. See more Griffith J @griffithxjohnson Oct 25 The plot is generic without anything surprising or special but mysterious enough to hold attention. The visuals are where this thrives with set design, colors, & lighting all looking absolutely beautiful. The atmosphere is also brilliant with the creepy gothic fairly tale tone working very well. Unique in its scares & violence yet I wish there was more of them. For better or worse, this is a pure del Toro film that is overacted, underwhelming, & a bit redundant on its execution.
