      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The writer slumming for human truths and real experience is a common enough story, but this cool-headed and slick thriller provides a gut-churningly compelling backdrop to a look at our darker sides.

Jamie S Very poor, low budget 90’s tv quality production. Such a corny script and stilted acting. I think the main character is supposed to be ‘cool’ but he just comes off as autistic. DON’T BOTHER! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review KB B It was a good movie that was engaging. It's worth the watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/25/23 Full Review Matt P Overrated. No way does it deserve 95% from critics. Standards were lower 25 years ago? Yes Clive Owen is very good, and the details about how casinos and gambling work are interesting, but these things do not make up for really puzzling elements in the plot. And I never really thought I cared about lighting in movies that much, but every scene feels like it was filmed under fluorescent lights. Not a single room in the entire movie evokes an interesting sense of atmosphere. I saw another review at that calls this movie self-serious, and I think that is an excellent descriptor as well. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/02/24 Full Review Georgan G Critic Roger Ebert said that the point of this film was not the plot, but the atmosphere and characterization. Which explains why I had difficulty following the plot. Good acting, which kept this sad movie interesting. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/06/23 Full Review bill f Suffers from a low budget and a lack of empathy for the lead. It's okay, but looks cheap and lacks any real style or believability as a result of the rather stilted script. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review shannon f Clive Owen does an incredible job playing the unemotional hustler, the guy who doesn't give a damn but plays his cards well enough to keep those around him thinking he does. The story unfolds like a Dragnet episode, clues dropped like poker chips, with an unexpected ending that leaves both the protagonist and the audience smirking. Xan Brooks Independent (UK) Script and direction play safe throughout. Rated: 2/5 Mar 20, 2019 Full Review David Ansen Newsweek Coolly hypnotic, the lean British sleeper Croupier is a reminder that movies don't have to wave their arms and scream to hold our attention. Mar 6, 2018 Full Review Brandon Judell indieWire But it's Clive Owen, who was so fine as the homosexual imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp in "Bent," who steals the show. If you need an actor who emotes thunderstorms while his flesh is as still as a spring day, look no further. May 26, 2016 Full Review Jas Keimig The Stranger (Seattle, WA) My favorite thing about Croupier is the sound of the different games: the chips stacked on the tables, the rattling of the marble ball spinning in the roulette wheel; the clip of the cards dealt in front of players. Dec 9, 2021 Full Review Eve Tushnet Patheos Not a great movie...kind of just hanging out, smoking a cigarette, flirting, cooking dinner, shaking. Jul 1, 2021 Full Review Antonia Quirke Independent on Sunday Croupier is fascinating, mercilessly compact, adamant. Mar 20, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews
