Insomniac X Jan 30 Hard-boiled detective pursues escaped fugitive in this bayou-based low budget noir. The film manages to generate interest and intrigue despite its simple story and limited resources, with some exciting sequences as the manhunt takes us deep into the swamp. Ends on a surprisingly heartfelt note. See more 01/16/2021 Director Joseph H. Lewis is known mostly for his B-movie classic Gun Crazy. But, there's so much more Lewis has to offer. Cry of the Hunted is one of those hidden gems. There's a lot to appreciate including the film's technical accomplishments despite its low-budget. The story's first half has a gritty noir feel and then transforms into a Heart of Darkness vibe (protagonist goes up a river to obsessively search for a criminal). 1950s censorship constrained Lewis to only hint at the obvious homosexual attraction between the two male lead characters, but it's obvious what's going on here... Cry of the Hunted is a 50s version of Brokeback Mountain. See more 09/29/2013 Some great camerawork highlights this fun chase film. See more 07/14/2010 just ok teen angst mixed with prison pic added in See more 09/22/2009 Good urban-rural Noir by Joseph Lewis, (Gun Crazy, Big Combo) with hardcase corrections officer Sullivan doggedly pursuing a well cast Vittorio Gassman deep into his native bayou. The rural stereotypes pile up pretty quickly, and Sullivan is not so ably assisted by a typecast William Conrad, (Cannon, Jake & The Fatman). Not the most original, or Lewis' best - but a fun watch.
