Audience Member Director Joseph H. Lewis is known mostly for his B-movie classic Gun Crazy. But, there's so much more Lewis has to offer. Cry of the Hunted is one of those hidden gems. There's a lot to appreciate including the film's technical accomplishments despite its low-budget. The story's first half has a gritty noir feel and then transforms into a Heart of Darkness vibe (protagonist goes up a river to obsessively search for a criminal). 1950s censorship constrained Lewis to only hint at the obvious homosexual attraction between the two male lead characters, but it's obvious what's going on here... The rural stereotypes pile up pretty quickly, and Sullivan is not so ably assisted by a typecast William Conrad, (Cannon, Jake & The Fatman). Not the most original, or Lewis' best - but a fun watch.
