Nancy S A very good film: good acting, photography, and screenplay. It is a bit dark but facinating with no easy answers, leaves one with lots to think about. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Starts out strong then unravels into a bit of a mess. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I haven't seen many Chabrol movies yet, but even though I'm perfectly willing to believe he's a great director, "Le Cri du Hibou" (1987) is definitely not one of his best productions. It starts off lukewarm, fails to warm up and puts the boot in right at the end: the final scene might have lifted it up, but instead, it proved to be downright silly and unrealistic (at what point was the knife plunged in, etc.). This relationship thriller could have been "thrilling", but for some reason it left me cold completely. I didn't care what was gonna happen next, whereas it should have kept us end the end of our seats. The story was promising enough, but alas. I had similar feelings about another Chabrol movie some time ago ("L'enfer" from 1994). Apparently, Chabrol was at his best before the eighties.
