Lois Alter Mark Entertainment Weekly The sequel is even more banal than the original. And it's difficult to take seriously the new film's position against the commercialism of sports, given Disney's NHL ties. Joey H. Released on March 25th 1994, less than two years after it’s predecessor; directed by Sam Weisman, written by Steven Brill and a score composed by J. A. C. Redford; everyone’s favorite Pee Wee Hockey team is back for another exciting challenge. Emilio Estevez returns as coach Gordon Bombay. Having been inspired by his leading the Ducks to victory the year before, Gordon has chosen to try out with a minor league hockey team for a shot at the NHL. But those dreams are halted by a career stalling knee injury that forces him to return home to Minnesota. Reuniting with his old friend Jan, the younger brother of Hans and his team captain and protégée Charlie Conway, Gordon is soon approached by a promoter and representative of Hendrix Hockey Apparel named Don Tibbles who offers Gordon the chance to be the coach for Team USA in the upcoming Junior Goodwill Games in Los Angeles, California. Gordon accepts the offer and enlists Charlie to round up some of the old Ducks to help form Team USA. Charlie manages to round up Jesse Hall, Lester Averman, Guy Germaine, Connie Moreau, Greg Goldberg, Adam Banks and Fulton Reed, while the rest of the team is formed by five new players from around the US; Luis Mendoza, a speedster from Miami, Florida who has trouble stopping; Dwayne Robertson from Austin, Texas, an incredibly talented puck handler; Julie “The Cat” Gaffney; a three time state winning goalie from Bangor, Maine; Ken Wu; an Olympic figure skater from San Francisco, California; and Dean Portman; a tough enforcer from Chicago, Illinois. The team is also introduced to their new tutor, Michele McKay, who later also becomes their secondary coach. The team quickly heads off to California and quickly set about moving up the ranks. Their biggest team to beat is the team from Iceland, coached by former NHL player Wolf “The Dentist” Stansson. While the Ducks manage to win their first few games, the lure of celebrity and a promising future with the big time soon goes to Gordon’s head and he starts to forget that it’s just a game and begins to neglect the team and push them too hard to the point of exhaustion. It ultimately takes the wisdom of Jan to set Gordon straight and help him remember to have fun; while a street hockey team led by brothers James and Russ Tyler offers to help toughen the Ducks up and teach them how to play like the “real” Team USA. Having gained a renewed spirit from both the street hockey team and the return of their coach, the Ducks begin to get back in the competition and make their way to the finals, also eventually recruiting Russ Tyler to join their team. This sequel is often regarded as the best of the trilogy. I know that it’s my personal favorite. Returning actors from the first film include Joshua Jackson as Charlie Conway, Elden Henson as Fulton Reed, Shaun Weiss as Greg Goldberg, Matt Doherty as Les Averman, Garette Henson as Guy Germaine, Marguerite Moreau as Connie Moreau, Brandon Quintin Adams as Jesse Hall, and Vincent A. Larusso as Adam Banks. Joining the cast for this outing include Jan Rubes as Jan, Michael Tucker as Don Tibbles, Kathryn Erbe as Michele McKay, Mike Vitar as Luis Mendoza, Colombe Jacobsen-Derstine as Julie “The Cat” Gaffney, Aaron Lohr as Dean Portman, Ty O’Neal as Dwayne Robertson, Justin Wong as Ken Wu, Kenan Thompson as Russ Tyler, Vicellous Reon Shannon as James Tyler, Scott Whyte as Iceland player Gunnar Stahl, Carsten Norgaard as Wolf “The Dentist” Stansson, and Maria Ellingsen as Marria, the trainer for the Iceland team. The film also features notable cameo appearances by real life athletes including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Greg Louganis, Kristi Yamaguchi, Cam Neely, Chris Chelios, Luc Robitaille and the Great One himself, Wayne Gretzky. I give this superb Disney sequel a hard ten out of ten. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/04/25 Full Review tommy J This is an awesome sequel to the original. Some say it's better than the original. An iconic movie so powerful that a professional hockey team was birthed from it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/10/25 Full Review Stephen C This movie sucks more than the first movie in the franchise!!!!!!!!!!!! The USA grossed over $45,600,000.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/17/25 Full Review Lennox B This movie is so much fun. Don't know were the hate for it starts a good hockey movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review Dale R The Ducks return, this time vying for a Junior Olympic gold. There is some really good set up in this movie, but the payoffs don’t all work. Emilio Estevez returns as Gordon Bombay and his main plot line is to not let fame go to his head and stay true to himself. He of course gets off track, but when he realizes his mistake the main antagonist who drove him off track is perfectly O.K. with the change. There are other examples of lazy writing that makes this attempt at recapturing the original movie not work. There are some enjoyable moments and a few laughs, but not enough to recommend this movie unless you liked the original Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Read all reviews
