Joey H. Released on October 4th, 1996; directed by Robert Lieberman; written by Steven Brill, Kenneth Johnson and Jim Burnstein, and with another score composed by J.A.C. Redford, the Mighty Ducks are back to fly for one last time on the ice. Picking up about a year after their victory at the Junior Goodwill Games, the Ducks are back home in Minnesota and are now entering high school and have been offered full athletic scholarships to the prestigious Eden Hall Academy that coach Gordon Bombay attended when he was younger. Rather than focusing on Bombay, this film focuses more on team captain Charlie Conway as he struggles to move from childhood to adolescence. While the school’s headmaster Dean Buckley welcomes the Ducks with open arms, the rest of the school board would rather not have them there as many of their children were denied entry to the school and denied a chance to be on the school’s hockey team to make room for the Ducks. Things get off to a really bad start however when Gordon announces to Charlie that he will not be coaching them and will instead be taking a job with the Junior Goodwill Games and will be handing the coaching job over to Ted Orion, a former NHL hockey player who played with the Minnesota North Stars before they relocated to Dallas. Unlike Gordon, whose coaching methods focus on having fun, Orion intends to teach the Ducks how to play some serious two way hockey; offense and defense. This leads to a lot of distrust and animosity between him and Charlie. To make things more complicated, the Ducks face ridicule, bullying and hazing pranks from the ten time championship senior varsity team, the Eden Hall Warriors. The Ducks and the Warriors engage in a series of pranks in order to warm up for their big JV-Varsity showdown on the ice. Things become more complicated when Charlie chooses to quit the team and then Hans, Gordon’s old friend and the team’s mentor passes away and it becomes too much for Charlie to handle. It takes some wisdom and advice from Gordon to finally convince Charlie to accept that he must return to the team and follow Coach Orion’s advice. After being welcomed back to the team, Charlie and the Ducks start learning how to play two way hockey to prepare for the big game against the Warriors and remind everyone why they have always been called The Mighty Ducks. Returning from the previous films in the franchise are Emilio Estevez as Gordon Bombay; Heidi Kling as Casey Conway; Joshua Jackson as Charlie Conway; Elden Henson as Fulton Reed; Shaun Weiss as Greg Goldberg; Matt Doherty as Les Averman; Garette Henson as Guy Germaine; Marguerite Moreau as Connie Moreau; Vincent A. Larusso as Adam Banks; Aaron Lohr as Dean Portman; Colombe Jacobsen-Derstine as Julie “The Cat” Gaffney; Ty O’Neal as Dwayne Robertson; Mike Vitar as Luis Mendoza; Justin Wong as Ken Wu; Kenan Thompson as Russ Tyler; and Joss Ackland as Hans. Also returning from the previous film is Scott Whyte as new character Scott “Scooter” Holland. Joining the cast for this film include Jeffrey Nordling as Coach Ted Orion; David Selby as Dean Buckley; Michael Cudlitz as Cole, Christopher Orr as Rick Riley; Margot Finley as Linda, Charlie’s love interest; Benjamin Salisbury as Josh the game announcer, and also features a cameo appearance by real life Mighty Ducks NHL player Paul Kariya. Many fans have speculated that this film is the weakest one in the franchise, myself included. When I saw this in theaters, I was none too pleased about how small of a role that Gordon Bombay and Dean Portman had in the film, and the complete absence of Brandon Quintin Adams returning to play Jesse Hall. But over the years, I have come to enjoy this film much better than I did as a child. Overall, I give this film an eight out of ten. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/04/25 Full Review Kirk L Best one so nostalgic... Explains the story that a ton of young kids face when it's time to start growing up and taking things seriously when you get to high school I am speaking on how Charlie's character was portrayed in the film and how he wanted to quit hockey. I was the same way with sports did not want to play anymore when the going got tough. This one really hits home. Coach Orion was a great role as a 2nd mentor to Charlie to pair with Bombay. Great movie6 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/14/25 Full Review Stephen C The worst of the 3 movies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why bother? The USA grossed over $23,000,000.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/25/25 Full Review Jeremiah B Hot take - this is the best of the bunch because of the shift in focus and Charlie’s character arc. Is he an annoying teen? Absolutely and that’s the point - plus it continues everything else you love about this series - hijinks and hockey Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Luke T The first two are by far better but it’s decent Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/13/24 Full Review Read all reviews
