Tunisia's first horror movie marks a bold entrance into the realm of genre film. Bouchnak's debut wears its influences on its sleeves but fully embraces the darkness to bring a new cultural tale of gruesome, dread-filled horror.

In the terms it sets at the start, "Dachra" is mostly but not entirely successful. It's not overtly political (though an argument could be made that it's partly about how Tunisia has changed since 2011's civil unrest), and it is pretty gripping.

There's potential here but it doesn't really come together. Points for some decent acting and having a go, but it is overlong, amateurishly shot and let down with a lot of derivative tropes that really weaken its impact.

Its a film about cults and witchcraft on the surface, but Dachra does it differently. A fresh setting in the French/Arabic speaking land of Tunisia. Littered with some truly disturbing scenes, I actually had nightmares about this one. Highly recommend for anyone looking a good cult horror
