Critics Consensus

A ruminative chamber piece on wheels, Daddio feels expansive thanks to Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn's compelling rapport.

Simon Abrams TheWrap As a feature-length conversation, “Daddio” lurches from one beat to the next; as a drama, it barely moves at all. Aug 8, 2024 Full Review Peter Rainer FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It's very fortunate that this is a two-hander with two very photogenic actors. Jul 13, 2024 Full Review Sergio Burstein Los Angeles Times The truth is that “Daddio” gives both of them [Penn & Johnson] an unbeatable opportunity to shine and it is precisely thanks to them that the film works as well as it does. [Full review in Spanish] Jul 2, 2024 Full Review Hayley Croke Loud and Clear Reviews Hall’s Daddio is an impressive debut feature. It is funny and touching and crass and moving and above all else a bold way to dive into a career as a director. Rated: 4/5 Dec 9, 2024 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz Writer-director Christy Hall’s single-location drama, originally conceived as a stage play, is a charming and, occasionally compelling, tale of two disparate people making a connection. Nov 25, 2024 Full Review John Serba Decider Daddio is no game-changer, but a lot less has been done with a hell of a lot more than one setting, two talented actors and a rock-solid script. DOps This was a captivating piece. All shot in a cab. Intimate, natural, conversational. Sean Penn plays the Brooklyn cabbie to a tee. Dakota Johnson is actually really great in managing her mien through engaged conversation and banter with Penn to angst about her relationships and backstory. Other than an occasional traffic shot on the outside it is all close up face time for the two actors. The is a lot of profanity. Conversational and not animated. Almost too much when you seem to get an F-Bomb every 10 seconds at times. Kind of distracts from the story. Also, there are a couple of screen shots and sex-act references which some may consider disturbing. Johnson has never looked lovelier and Penn never more authentic. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review BRENT SIMON A wonderful & beautiful film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/02/24 Full Review CS I didn’t care for the nudity. and the sexting. Sean Penn was good at providing real input into the issues. The character Dakotah played was used to being abused and ignored growing up so her current relationship continues that theme. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review Rex So refreshing to see authentic human connection on the big screen. If you're tired of the pew pew pow pow of the superhero takeover, then this film is for you! Great writing and A level actors getting to sink their teeth into juicy roles. Writer/director Christy Hall is a super talent and delivers a compelling story, simply but elegantly told. I hope major studios keep investing in projects like this - loved it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/10/24 Full Review Mo Peaks What an amazing movie and amazing acting. Beautiful story and dialogue but it is not for everyone. You have to be a “human” for this movie to touch you. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/10/24 Full Review Che o Dakota Johnson and Sean Paul are good actors and worth watching Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/10/24 Full Review Read all reviews
