What to Know

Critics Consensus

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg have proven comedic chemistry, but Daddy's Home suffers from a dearth of genuinely funny ideas - and lacks enough guts or imagination to explore the satirical possibilities of its premise.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com It's Ferrell and Wahlberg who keep this engine revving like it does, a statement that shouldn't come as a shock for all of those who watched the pair's 2010 hit The Other Guys. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 16, 2016 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Scroll.in Begins with an interesting premise but does not pack in enough satire into its contrived and predictable screenplay. Apr 15, 2016 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times That's one problematic comedy. Rated: 2/4 Jan 7, 2016 Full Review David Griffiths Subculture Entertainment The film seems to work best when it forgets about trying to be funny and instead goes for more touching scenes, like a step-Dad trying his best with his kids, but also falls on its face when it tries to ‘show-up’ other films. Rated: 2.5/5 Mar 10, 2025 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Here's one of those comedies like Meet the Parents where an awkward family situation escalates, and everyone onscreen behaves so farcically that their inane behavior can only be explained by the requirements of the script. Rated: 1/4 Apr 23, 2022 Full Review Ian Brill Battleship Pretension Daddy's Home promises a battle between two forms of masculinity and fatherhood, and the implications of that could be fascinating. But what we get is as intense as a sparring match. Apr 13, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

BadNews R Daddy’s Home is a comedy that pairs two heavyweights of the genre: Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. The premise sets up Ferrell as the awkward, overly wholesome stepfather trying to win over his stepkids, while Wahlberg swoops in as the charming but rough-around-the-edges biological dad with a criminal/con-man streak. What follows is a clash of personalities, egos, and over-the-top antics that make for a modern throwback to the kind of broad, goofy comedies you’d expect from the 90s. The film works best when it leans into the chemistry between Ferrell and Wahlberg. Their constant back-and-forth one-upmanship is pure comedic energy—whether they’re sabotaging each other’s parenting attempts or escalating their ridiculous feud. Even if you’re not a die-hard Ferrell fan (and honestly, I’m not), this is one of his more palatable roles. He dials down the shouting and absurdity just enough to make his “goofy nice guy” persona actually work, especially when contrasted with Wahlberg’s more grounded tough-guy routine. Mark Wahlberg, meanwhile, shines as the “bad guy funny guy.” He brings that cocky, smug confidence he’s perfected over the years, but adds just enough charm to keep his character likable. It’s fun to watch him push Ferrell’s buttons, and even more fun when Ferrell awkwardly tries to push back. Together, they play off each other extremely well, elevating the film beyond its otherwise formulaic setup. That being said, Daddy’s Home isn’t without its flaws. The script is uneven, with plenty of jokes that fall flat or drag on a little too long. Some of the supporting characters (like Linda Cardellini, who plays the mom stuck in the middle) feel underwritten and underused, existing mainly to react to the chaos rather than drive the story. And while the movie delivers laughs, it doesn’t offer much originality. You can see most of the punchlines coming from a mile away. Still, despite its imperfections, the film is undeniably entertaining. It has that light, easygoing energy that makes it perfect for a casual rewatch. I’ve revisited it a few times myself—not because it’s a must-see classic, but because it’s just fun enough to throw on when you want some mindless laughs. Verdict: Daddy’s Home isn’t a perfect comedy, but it’s a funny, enjoyable one. Ferrell and Wahlberg’s chemistry is the heart of the movie, and it’s what makes it worth checking out. It may not be a film I rush to revisit often, but when I do, it still manages to make me laugh. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/15/25 Full Review Audience Member Wasn’t funny at all. It was just irritating and dumb. There wasn’t a single time I laughed during the movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/14/25 Full Review Koi P The storyline is annoying by fault, but it's still funny. I couldn't help but laugh. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/14/25 Full Review I Am F Wow, a good premise can make a film with annoying characters and stupid plot lines. Wasted potential.
