Neil Jillett The Age (Australia) Dancers hasn't a hint of tension or dramatic interest Baryshnikov's acting and Ennio Guarnieri's photography are slightly better than my dancing. Mirela P The only way I could watch the movie was to accept guessing what the dialogue was about, because a Russian translator covered it. I'm very sure I didn't lose much. I was watching the movie for Baryshnikov and the story was about him - well, a Russian ballet celebrity, with a different name, but as seductive as always, trying to put Giselle on screen. The plot follows pretty closely that of the ballet, almost ending in tragedy. But none of this matters when one gets to see the whole second act of Giselle at the end of the movie, with an out of this world Albrecht, and a heavenly interpretation, costumes, setting, choreography. I was crying again, like I do every time I see Giselle with Mikhail Baryshnikov. And yet the wonder artist gave me more this time. Everybody knows about his unique style and technique, and I was so curious about his approach to the characters he manages to interpret like a very good actor. One can imagine, watch interviews and so on. In Dancers there are scenes in which he explains SO clearly the right way to obtain an effect, an emotion, to get to the essence of the character, that I got it all even in Russian! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/27/24 Full Review Steve D Come for the dancing but everything else is good too. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Based on Giselle by Adolphe Adam, Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, Dancers tells the story of Tony (Mikhail Baryshnikov), who is trying to stage the final dance of Giselle in his career — much like Baryshnikov as this was to be a film record of his dancing in that play — just as he falls in love with Lisa (Julie Kent), but then she learns that he's used the same romantic lines on every other lover he's ever had. Director Herbert Ross started as a dancer, became a choreographer and debuted as a director with the movie Goodbye, Mr. Chips. Some of his better regarded films are The Owl and the Pussycat, Play It Again Sam, Pennies From Heaven, Footloose, Steel Magnolias and Boys On the Side. His wife Nora Kaye was a ballerina and produced several of his movies, including The Turning Point, Nijinsky, Pennies From Heaven and The Secret of My Succe$s. She executive produced this movie, but sadly died before it was released. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Dancers (1987) - A brief reminder of Giselle ballet performed by Baryshnikov with a totally subdued 'main' story of a young, beautiful dancer coming to a studio in Italy and falling love with the charismatic womaniser, her teacher and dancing partner (Baryshnikov), who can't resist the temptation to have a short affair with the aspiring student and break her heart. That nearly leads to disaster. Ballet is more-or-less nicely shot, but the rest its awful, though, I think it will do for the great ballet dancer's fans. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie is with Mikhail Barishnikov one of the greatest dancers in the world.
