Darbar may be Superstar Rajinikanth's first film with hit director A R Murugadoss, but it remains a Rajini film which bows at each step to the continuing myth of the one and only Thalaivar. Go to Full Review

Darbar, Rajinikanth's latest Herculean tribute to himself, is about as enjoyable as it is ridiculous. Go to Full Review

Darbar... is out-and-out pulp meant strictly for Rajinikanth fans. The film is disappointing. Thalaiva isn't. Go to Full Review

...the trouble with Darbar is that Murgadoss does not have a convincing story and the narration lacks logic. Go to Full Review

AR Murugadoss plays on Rajinikanth's strength and swag but everything else in this film gets a lackadaisical treatment. Darbar is no Petta. Go to Full Review

While there is the cockiness of Alex Pandian (Murgadoss's inspiration for this character), there is also vulnerability. And his infectious energy and inimitable style keep us rooting (and hooting) for his character. Go to Full Review

Atul D Sep 27 At its core, Darbar doesn’t reinvent the wheel — a cop father, a beloved daughter, drug busts, and corruption are familiar tropes. Yet, the way AR Murugadoss unfolds the screenplay keeps the story engaging and surprisingly fresh. Rajinikanth plays Aaditya Arunachalam with a blend of charm and authority — a confident cop who relies on both intellect and strength. His presence carries the film with ease, and watching him slip into this stylish avatar is a treat in itself. Among the supporting cast, Nivetha Thomas stands out with a composed performance, while the police team around Rajini feels well-knit and authentic. Murugadoss directs with flair, mixing mass entertainment and meaningful beats in a 60/40 balance. The action sequences are crafted to suit Rajinikanth’s age, leaning toward sleek and swift choreography rather than brute spectacle. Backed by sharp cinematography and detailed set design, the film maintains a polished visual appeal. Thematically, Darbar taps into justice and the father-daughter bond while sprinkling in the masala elements audiences expect. Anirudh’s music amplifies the high points, giving the film its stylish punch. Still, the climax, while good, comes across as slightly rushed. Suniel Shetty’s villain is built up with menace early on but ultimately feels nerfed, lowering the final conflict’s impact. Sum up - Darbar thrives on Rajinikanth’s charisma, clever direction, and its mix of mass and sentiment. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s a stylish entertainer elevated by the superstar’s screen presence. See more Jan 31 Darbar is just another action flick by Rajnikanth which doesn't have the fun of other such films. It comes across as bland for the most part where the humor or the thrills are concerned. The only thing that stands out is the bond b/w Rajni and his daughter which is portrayed beautifully but other than that a forgettable film. Spend your time on something worthwhile lol See more 05/16/2021 Darbar - 6.5/10. Rajinikanth and A.R. Murugadoss unite for the first time with Darbar, and the results are a little underwhelming. Murugadoss is a talented director, but I feel like he has already peaked in his career, and since then he has had a steady decline. Darbar is an example of a movie that should have worked, but falls quite short. But its not a terrible movie however, in fact I would say its a little better than his previous film, Sarkar. We see Rajini in a police character for the first time in ages, and he does a decent job with whatever is given to him. The problem is, the film isn't presented in the best way possible. We are given a spoiler in the story really early on, so by the time that spoiler comes into fruition within the story, you don't feel the impact of that scene as much as you would want. The film tries to be a mix of a straight forward cop movie with a celebration to Rajini. Petta, Rajini's previous film, worked because even though the story was really basic, the celebration towards his image and mannerisms worked in the context of that film. Karthik Subbaraj literally molded a fan fiction film for his favourite actor, and just wanted to dedicate the film to Rajini, whereas Murugadoss is kind of teetering between going full out fanboy mode to sticking to a story. Darbar delivers in some scenes, and the songs grow on you (though they are not as catchy as the Petta songs). Anirudh gives a overall good score. Nayanthara and Yogi Babu both come and go in the story, with their respective performances easily forgettable. Nivetha Thomas is probably the brightest spot in the film outside of Rajini, as she delivers a solid performance as his daughter. All in all, Darbar is decent fare for a regular film goer, the movie might be enjoyed more by his fans, but it doesn't strike a chord like Petta did.
