      Critics Consensus

Dare's sharp writing and appealing young cast are often enough to outweigh its jarringly jumbled narrative.

Audience Member I found this pointless with an end that left much to be desired. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/28/23 Full Review Audience Member It had such an interesting story development.Three young people, each one searching for something else in their lives, each and every one driven from their own desires. The last 10 minutes fell flat on my head and ruined the entire movie.I mean the ending was just not a finale. This had no conlcusion! And that drove me crazy.Emmy Rossum is wonderful, she is so expressional!Gilford was also really great. In fact all 3 of the main characters were perfect in their parts. The movie just was a disappointment. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Ironic title for a film that wants to push boundaries but refuses to go all the way. A love triangle setup with two guys and a girl is seldom seen, but each time these characters generate some interest, it soon dissolves thereafter. That's probably due to the lack of chemistry between the actors. The one scene with real meat is chewed up by Alan Cumming during his brief appearance. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member "Dare" is like the doppelganger of a John Hughes movie. It explores the depths of teen sexuality and rebellion not with humor, but with an honest bleakness that is honestly something a viewer can respect. But then again, it has the opportunity to go farther. Sometimes it goes full throttle, sometimes it holds back. There's a lot of controversial material just bubbling over the surface of "Dare", but it only occasionally explodes. On the other hand, you get an awesome cast: Emmy Rossum, Zach Gilford and Rooney Mara are all very good, but Ashley Springer is someone to watch out for. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member 3/8/2015: Emmy Rossum is great, but I wasn't a huge fan of this movie. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member A fairly interesting take on the high school experience of over privileged suburbanites. This isn't exactly virgin territory (no pun intended), but the writer and director put in (no pun intended) enough edgy material to make it worthwhile. The character's confusion as to who they are and what their future holds is vividly captured by the trio of young actors who make up this confused threesome (pun intended). Nathan Rabin AV Club I didn't expect much from Dare going in but was pleasantly surprised by its willingness to take chances and push its characters and its audience out of their comfort zones. Rated: B+ Aug 4, 2021 Full Review James Greenberg Hollywood Reporter What elevates Dare above the usual high school fare is the quality of the writing by David Brind, crisp direction by Adam Salky and a uniformly attractive and compelling cast led by the delightful Emmy Rossum. Nov 10, 2015 Full Review Peter Debruge Variety Though minor arcs play out in each piece, Dare lacks an overarching narrative to propel the entire film, so overall pacing feels uneven and long at just 90 minutes. Jul 6, 2010 Full Review Stina Chyn Film Threat What might otherwise be an exercise in ordinary adolescent stories turns powerfully intimate through the wonderful performances that Salky coaxes out from the cast. Rated: 4/5 Feb 10, 2022 Full Review Neil Miller Film School Rejects It is so fresh and fun. Nov 10, 2015 Full Review Matt Prigge Philadelphia Weekly I've rarely seen a more rabidly inconsistent film -- astute one moment, stupid the next. Rated: C+ Nov 10, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews
