Lael Loewenstein FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) There's a quirky charm to this film. Dec 5, 2024 Full Review Federico Furzan Movie-Blogger.com An emotional ride and a hot piece that advocates without getting too melodramatic. Rated: 4/5 Nov 26, 2024 Full Review Michael Clark Epoch Times Directed by Alexander Yellen and written by his wife, Kelli McNeil (who also has a supporting role), “Daruma” shatters all road flick, quirky family film, and romantic drama blueprints, without going too far in the other direction on any level. Rated: 5/5 Nov 25, 2024 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …well-written and smartly performed, Daruma will hopefully punch a hole in the wall that separates those with disabilities from the ignorant who choose to ignore or mock them, with straight-up, affecting performances and can’t miss, inclusive messaging... Rated: 4/5 Nov 20, 2024 Full Review Patrick McDonald HollywoodChicago.com High-level & nuanced performances from Forrest and Lawson, & responsibility for another rises their obvious anger above the fate of their disabilities, which allows a new path of contemplation on the road to those twin concepts of healing & forgiveness. anonymous The acting was strong, and the storyline was quite original. The performance by Tobias Forrest was especially impressive. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/22/24 Full Review Zander S What a joy. I had few expectations going in as indie films can be a mixed bag but this was a delightful road trip movie about a guy in a wheel chair who finds out he has a 4-year old daughter, realizes hes not parent material, and then needs his next door neighbor to help him drive her across the country to live with her grandparents. The neighbor happens to be a double amputee with hooks for hands. The disability thing is interesting since its not what the storys about. It just is. The film could easily stray into sappy territory but doesnt. The characters and their choices feel real, for lack of a better word. The fathers path to redemption is anything but straight and the neighbor has a some demons of his own to reckon with. Theres a love interest who overlooks some major red flags in search of companionship but then refuses to be a doormat. Without spoiling anything, everyone doesnt get a fairytale ending. Its a familiar-feeling story but it has enough moments that dont go as expected to keep it feeling fresh and interesting. That speaks to good writing. The directing is similarly solid with the story flowing smoothly and no potholes to jar me out of it. There are some really beautiful shots, the music choices are excellent, and the acting is strong all around. The little girl and the grandpa got me genuinely choked up a couple of times. Ive been pretty disappointed by the big Hollywood offerings in what I think we can all agree has been a pretty stressful year. Daruma is the ray of sunshine I didnt know I needed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Audience Member Heartfelt, real. Great actors. These are the kinds of films that need more promotion. I would recommend this film to anyone. There is so much more I could say but I think it’ll take up too much space. Daruma is the movie of the year!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Andy S Well-made film with classic indie vibes and a touching father-daughter relationship at the center of the story. Stars a pair of surprisingly strong actors with actual disabilities and very cute little girl. If you like indie roadtrip movies, definitely watch it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review Joan B Daruma is engaging, riveting and funny—so entertaining that you almost miss the fact that by the time it ends, you’ve become a better person. It beguiles you into realizing that disabilities do not define who someone is—or isn’t. The acting is superb, the story is gripping, and the message is one of hope. Plus the cinematography is breathtaking! This film should be on everyone’s must-see list. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/08/24 Full Review Alec M Daruma is excellent. The four-year old girl is adorable and a surprisingly adept actress for one so young. It pulls at your heartstrings, while also packing some humor. And the shots are fantastic. So many gorgeous colors and views of Americana as they make their road trip. Check it out! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews
