Critics Consensus

An uneasy blend of action and comedy, Date Night doesn't quite live up to the talents of its two leads, but Steve Carell and Tina Fey still manage to shine through most of the movie's flaws.

Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express The real stars of the film are [Steve] Carell and [Tina] Fey for bringing such goofy conviction to this goofball comedy, much better than the director's previous attempts at broad humour in the two Night at the Museum films. Audience Member ugh. Tina Fey seems great when writing for TV but falters mightily when it comes to the big screen. This movie blows. Its not funny, I didn't even laugh once, and the premise is contrived and predictable. Carrel, who I love= phoned this one in. He had the energy and enthusiasm of a man wondering what he is still doing making movies, lol. Even on a night when you are bored out of your mind and starved for entertainment, I suggest getting a tray of ice cubes, if you still freeze your own, and watching them melt. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/04/25 Full Review Reese R This movie should be so funny with the leads but somehow it’s stale and inconsistent. It starts decent enough but meanders when it should speed up. I don’t understand how they arrive at the plot they decided to stick with but it’s just not engaging. The played out joke where women have a buff ex that intimidates the guy they married which implies that the woman settled is cringy. The jokes just stopped coming or stopped hitting while the leads are hilarious in other things. Maybe this just wasn’t the right movie for them but it’s sad to see funny people flounder when you know they are capable of much more. I’m sure people who are casually engaged and don’t want anything serious to watch would enjoy this movie and its lack of stakes, even though they tried to add stakes, but it ends up being boring trying to be comedy and action and not delivering on either front. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/27/25 Full Review Luis Otavio F Good chemistry between Tina Fey and Steve Carell, it's good entertainment. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review Ed R Funny and cheesy comedy. Light-hearted flick. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/29/24 Full Review Rare T It’s got everything you’d expect from a typical Hollywood picture: a predictable plot, mediocre quips, a dose of adrenaline, a sprinkle of bawdiness, and of course an A-list cast and cameo selection, including Ray Liotta, J.B. Smoove, Mila Kunis, will.i.am, Mark Ruffalo, Common, and many others. Date Night is quirky and enjoyable enough for a favorable review, but not quite there yet when it comes to being memorable or saving a spot among your favorites. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/10/24 Full Review KB B This was such a hilarious movie with a great plot. It's definitely worth the watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/19/24 Full Review Read all reviews
