      Audience Member Rust and Bone is a very well made film with wonderful performances throughout. Especially from lead actress Marion Cotillard and lead actor Matthias Schoenaerts. Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts), a former boxer and single father, meets Stephanie (Marion Cotillard) when he saves her from a brawl at the nightclub where he works as a bouncer. Their casual acquaintance develops into something much more after Stephanie, who trains killer whales at a marine park, suffers a horrible accident and loses both her legs above the knee. As Stephanie draws on Ali's physical strength, an unexpected courtship slowly comes to life. The relationships that are formed through the duration of this film are a revelation and very complexed. This movie is a very well crafted Drama that will take you one way one minute and then the next somewhere else. Rust And Bone is a very solid film and gets 4 stars out of 5 from me. Something about it didn't emotionally jolt me too much. Somewhere my investment in the characters wasn't too tense but the plot was reasonable enough to carry it along. The CGI work for the stumps and prosthetics was outstanding. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/26/23 Full Review Nawt W With many factors and themes that could have easily turned the entire narrative into melodrama, the director exercises stupendous restraint to prevent this from happening. The downside to it all is the fact that in the entire two-hour run of this movie, there is no "plot" to speak of. There is the orca incident, and then there is the process of Stephanie and Alain connecting and slowly letting each other into their lives of unique domesticity. And then the movie ends with a scene that, if not for the director's skill, could have dunked the whole plot into said melodrama. Schoenaerts and Cotillard are amazing in their roles, as is Armand Verdure. It's honestly rare to see such an authentic 5-year-old; granted, he didn't have a great number of lines, but still. The other distinctly impressive aspect are the legs. The brilliant combination of doubles and CGI will undoubtedly cause some to wonder if they really did cut off Marion Cotillard's legs. Well, last night I finally managed to keep on going and I have to say it is quite an impressive movie, and Marion's performance is exceptional. Sad situations happen to all of us, some more serious than others, but normally we don't want to see them in movies as well. But the rebounding over the dilemma of her character is incredibly well expressed, by her impeccable acting as well as a great director's job. 6/10 points.
