John Serba Decider Dead Sleep is bottom-of-the-barrel true crime crud. Dec 17, 2021 Full Review Barbara Shulgasser Common Sense Media The question of whether a sleepwalking defense explains this murder is left unanswered, but more problematic is that on the journey to answering it, Dead Asleep often devolves into psych-speak and bland and unconvincing conclusions. Rated: 2/5 Dec 16, 2021 Full Review Natalia Keogan Paste Magazine The film's goal is to be as shallowly entertaining and consumable as possible, even if that means trading documentary ethics for a slick, sensationalist slant. Jeff M While I can't recommend this as a film - it's basically nothing more than what you would find on a news program like 20/20 or DATELINE NBC - the subject itself is quite fascinating and actually had me doing a lot of thinking afterwards. Years ago, my mom told me that she caught me sleepwalking once. I was quite young - maybe 10 years old or so. She said I got up from bed, went to the piano, played a song and went right back to bed. The next morning I had no recollection of this whatsoever. It really made me ponder how unbelievably disturbing it would be to wake up with a bloody knife in your hand and a dead body in front of you and honestly no memory of what happened. Herman's case here is quite complicated, and I don't envy the jurors who had to make a decision. I do wish the film had gone more in-depth with the individuals involved. We don't learn enough about them to care much beyond our general empathy as human beings. Nevertheless, the topic is something I've been thinking about a lot since I watched it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/24 Full Review Kylie S Absolutely atrocious. How can you make a documentary without the consent of the brutally murdered women's family? How can you attribute to a crime documentary society when you don't have the respect or decency for the victim? Your story line was completely discredited. Hope you're sued for every penny made by the victims family as it's not your story to make money on or to even tell for that matter. What an awful human you must be to make an absolute brutal murderer out to be the good guy at the end without the inculcation of all the credible evidence. Shame on you and your film production. Disgusting grifters. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/02/23 Full Review Ben P I thought this was a fascinating doc. Even though the family members declined to participate, the prosecution was heavily featured and made a good case for Randy's guilt. I understand why the family would be upset, but the film itself is fair and straightforward. In fact, it paints a very damning portrait of a mentally unstable young man. And the victim was portrayed in the a very positive, sympathetic light. The criticism of the film seem personal. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/25/23 Full Review Jordan S The simple fact that the family of the victim does not approve of this "true crime" documentary removes any purpose for it's existence outside of pure network greed. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/03/23 Full Review Audience Member It is horrible that this documentary was released despite the fact the victim's family is not okay with this movie being aired. This movie further perpetuates trauma and harm to the victim's family. It is disgusting Hulu released this documentary despite the family's wishes. DO NOT WATCH under any circumstances!!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review the s Well done in terms of presenting the story and the background and following through to the court case. Tragic event any angle you view it from but I feel like the jury did the only thing they could do, given the facts and timeline. People typically want someone to blame and someone to be angry at anytime there is a murder and I get that. But there are times when you have to step back and just realize there may not be someone to blame or reason to get angry at the accused. The case defies the basics of most murder scenarios and that's what makes it difficult for everyone involved. But ultimately if you take a life regardless of the circumstances or whether or not there is a motive, there has to be punishment befitting of the fact that you took that life. Whether it was sleepwalking or not, people have to admit that he stabbed her 25 times and she died a horribly violent death…there had to be punishment and there was no cut and dry case for defense. Her life was taken and now his freedom is taken and it may not be true justice but it also may be as close as anyone could get to it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
