Steve D Untruthful and downright corny. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Spaghetti western where Anthony Quinn plays a deaf mute agent working for Texas President Sam Huston, right after Texas gained independence from Mexico. Quinn is ordered to infiltrate and stop a group of Texas rebels, but the rebels intercepted a cable saying a deaf mute is in their midsts, so Quinn and his partner Franco Nero must conceal his condition in order to complete their mission. The film also features Pamela Tiffin, who I'd always liked in Billy Wilder's "One, Two, Three" and couldn't remember seeing her in much else, so it was nice to see her in this. It's not a classic, but Quinn and Nero make strong leads and are enough to make this a better than average Italian western of from this time. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member ok spaghetti western. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Directed by Paolo Cavara, (Mondo Cane (1962) and Black Belly of the Tarantula (1971), this is a spaghetti western based loosely upon the life of a real American frontiersman. It's a good film, but it was made at a time when Hollywood started turning their back on spaghetti westerns, but this was lucky as MGM picked it up for distribution. Set in 1836, and Texas has just gained independence from Mexico, but U.S. President Sam Houston fears that rebels and groups will take advantage of Texas' new found freedom, and use it to declare war on America. So, he sends in Erastus 'Deaf' Smith (Anthony Quinn) to bring down one of the leading rebel groups in Texas, led by Mexican General Lucius Morton (Franco Graziosi), who is planning a revolution. Deaf Smith is deaf and mute, so he has his close friend and partner Johnny Ears (Franco Nero) to help him. In order to infiltrate General Morton's gang, Johnny Ears has to try and hide Deaf Smith's handicaps, but that's not going to be easy when Johnny Ears is distracted with local prostitute Susie (Pamela Tiffin), who he has fallen hopelessly in love with. It's a good western that doesn't outstay it's welcome, Quinn manages to convey so much without saying a single word or making a noise of any kind. It's not as violent as Sergio Leone's westerns and the shootout in the end has Sam Peckinpah written all over it, but it works and it's enjoyable while it lasts.
