Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) This is a weak film but an endearing one, a would-be black comedy undermined by the amiability of all concerned. Rated: 2/5 Nov 15, 2012 Full Review Kate Rodger Newshub (NZ) The dark twisted humour of two little boys really did tickle my slightly deviant funny bone and I found myself thoroughly enjoying this southland romp. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 29, 2019 Full Review Jim Schembri 3AW Limp comedy. Rated: 1.5/5 Nov 26, 2012 Full Review Julie Rigg MovieTime, ABC Radio National This is no ordinary buddy movie. It is, actually, an anti buddy movie, and while there are some sequences which could have been funnier, the story maintains a kind of bizarre logic which somehow speaks New Zealand. Nov 16, 2012 Full Review Simon Foster sbs.com.au Having earlier scored a breakout hit with his next-to-no-budget Scarfies (1999), a film that explored the lives of similarly low-brow characters but with far greater depth and narrative strength, more can rightfully be expected of the director. Nov 14, 2012 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Sunday Age With a backdrop of natural wonders and a suitably ironic deployment of familiar Kiwi pop hits, Two Little Boys strikes a fair balance between the outlandish and the recognisable. brendan n Bizarre characters and an odd storyline might frustrate some viewers, but I thought this was quite good. Funny and simple at times, it's the casting that work for the film. Dark and full of black comedy that is tough to engage with, it is one hybrid genre that is very tough to combine. It's weird and offers some genuine humour in the latter third. The film fell into obscurity and may have been too weird for the target audience. 24/06/2019 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Great Kiwi soundtrack and some beautiful shots of NZ's scenery, but nowhere near as funny as it should've been with Blake & McKenzie in it. A little too much gallows humour - that isn't that funny, just gross in parts - and it just turns out that it's one friend leading the other astray. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I watched the movie 3 times to come to a conclusion that if one was to supplant Deano with a woman, the movie takes on a really different tone. Imagine Deano as Denise and wow, it is a powerful piece of work. This is art house genius and one of the finest movies I have ever seen. Once were Warriors was raw. This movie is raw. Nige wouldn't take a bullet for his mate yet he said that he would. Deano said that he would and he did. I pondered this and found it most provocative. I know the Catlins well and the authenticity was great. Totally under rated movie in my opinion. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Horrible title aside, this dark comedy was a little too dark to be considered enjoyable. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Picked this movie up purely because Hamish Blake was a main character. Started off well with a few laughs but it did drag on a lot which was disappointing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member You would really want to like a film like this. No change that to 'laugh at a film' like this. Unfortunately the New Zealand brothers who made this film appear to have lost their way in life a long time ago, just like the two central characters have, and when it came to making their masterpiece, they cocked up badly. Well, when I say masterpiece, I think maybe they believed in their own hype after their debut several years ago. This childish, unfunny, cult-status-attempting fare is down at the mill on its daily errands. It's pretty bad despite the efforts of Maori actor Maaka Pohatu. The unedifying annoyance of the two lead buddy characters is relentless (one is Bret from the Conchords and the other is some pointless fool/waste of existence who is regarded as celebrity on Australian TV). It is not worth watching so DON'T watch it...please. Well, it's up to you, isn't it? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
