What to Know

Critics Consensus

Built from many of the same ingredients as other Nicholas Sparks tearjerkers, Dear John suffers from its cliched framework, as well as Lasse Hallstrom's curiously detached directing.

Samantha L Dear John cranks up the melodrama in true Nicholas Sparks fashion, but it’s tough to ignore the solid performances at its core. Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried have this undeniable chemistry that sells the whirlwind romance, even when the plot feels like a well-worn path. Tatum, in particular, shines as John, playing the soldier torn between duty and love. But it’s the father-son relationship that hits the hardest. The emotional goodbye to his father is just as gut-punching as his farewell to Savannah, adding layers you don’t usually expect in your typical romantic drama. Lasse Hallström brings his signature warm touch, making even the most predictable plot points feel personal. You’ve got all the classic Sparks stuff—sandy beaches, handwritten letters, and star-crossed lovers—but the real standout is how the film dives into deeper connections, showing that communication goes beyond just words. The cinematography? Gorgeous. While the movie doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel, it knows its audience and delivers on that sweet, emotional tension. Yeah, it’s sentimental and predictable, but that’s also kind of the point, right? If you’re looking for an old-school tearjerker with a stunning cast and beautiful backdrops, Dear John does what it’s supposed to. It’s simple, heartfelt, and totally designed to yank at those heartstrings—so, maybe stock up on tissues before you hit play. I love Amanda Seyfried And Channing Tatum's Chemistry Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/29/24 Full Review Paige W So cute! Hate how she marries someone else though so stupid! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/23/24 Full Review Ciaran S This movie seems less and less heartfelt and more and more shall we say ("yawns") a bit boring really. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/20/24 Full Review Yash B I'll be honest, I expected "Dear John" to play out one of two ways, and it surprised me by not playing out even close to either of those ways. The movie does feel uneven in its pacing and it is aggressively trying to get emotions out of the audience, but I do think the story is pretty solid. The performances are good even when the dialogue is hit or miss, and it makes the movie pretty watchable. I do feel the core romance is a bit rushed in the beginning but there's enough to get on board even though the leads could have benefitted from more layered expositions. Overall, it is a movie that has a lot of moments that can come off as cheesy or sappy, but I think there was more here than I expected and for that, I do think it deserves some props. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/09/24 Full Review Julia D This movie was such a disappointment. Terrible storyline, missing any sort of climax. Wish I could get those 2 hours of my life back Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
