Vincent Canby New York Times Death in the Garden is a kind of halfway house for the film genius, made when he had yet to receive the acclaim that would give him full control of his movies, but after he had been taken seriously enough by the money men. Rated: 4/5 May 9, 2005 Full Review Ed Gonzalez Slant Magazine Signoret's frenzy becomes her character's, enervating an otherwise humdrum melodrama. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 31, 2002 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader No masterpiece, but a prime example of subversive cinema. Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Nathanael Hood Unseen Films Though belonging to the oft-overlooked Mexican phase of Buñuel's career, Death in the Garden is nonetheless as caustic and vicious as anything he ever made. Rated: 7/10 Jun 18, 2020 Full Review Josh Larsen LarsenOnFilm ...a subterfuge film from Buuel, in which his style and politics are subsumed within genre trappings. Rated: 3.5/4 Oct 28, 2016 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com Luis Bunuel's rarely seen "Death in the Garden" (1955) is a survivalist suspense film with a subtle dose of political and religious commentary. Audience Member Buñuel's big budget movie about a revolution in South America doesn't have his trademark surrealism but uses the jungle as the locale where people's worst qualities come out to play and destroy each other. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member 7.5 [Luis Buñuel] [Mx] Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member surrealists master bunnel tries a commerical pic with signoret as a ho that doesn't do much business but every scene she is in a different faboulous costume! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Disappointingly lifeless for a Bunuel film, regardless of the fact that in it he remains true to dealing with some of his favourite themes. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member I am not a patient viewer, I need something to grab my attention rather quickly, an image, an opening quote, I need to be drawn in. With films like Coppola's "Somewhere" or Leone's "The Good the Bad and the Ugly", there isn't dialogue right away, but there is intrigue. Death in the Garden has the poorest production quality I've ever seen except for maybe a version of Romeo and Juliet I glanced at from the early thirties. It looks like a T.V movie from the 90's. I'm sort of shocked that Criteron has this in there collection, because it's one of the worst they have to offer. There is nothing to like about this film, the dialogue is silly, the camerawork is abysmal and awkward, and the acting is dreadful. I want this movie destroyed.
