Death of a Unicorn

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Receiving some sparkle from Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega's father-daughter rapport, Death of a Unicorn's broad satire is a bit too on the horn but makes for an entertainingly splattery creature feature.

Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) Death of a Unicorn operates on a level of “it’s fine”, without landing any knock-out blows. Rated: 3/5 Apr 22, 2025 Full Review Jake Wilson Sydney Morning Herald ...[Death of a Unicorn] is the good-taste version of an innately bad-taste idea. Rated: 3/5 Apr 10, 2025 Full Review John Nugent Empire Magazine This is sadly unsuccessful as both an eat-the-rich satire and a schlocky B-movie. Rated: 2/5 Apr 9, 2025 Full Review Aglaia Berlutti El nacional Director Alex Scharfman turns the mythical figure of the unicorn into that of an unstoppable and dangerous killer beast. But also, in a well posed metaphor about opulence, late capitalism and even the pharmaceutical industry. [Full Review in Spanish] Rated: B May 24, 2025 Full Review Susan Granger SSG Syndicate Judging by its outlandish subject matter, I expected writer/director Alex Scharfman's absurdist A24 feature to be - at the very least - an intriguing fantasy/satire. Instead, it's astoundingly awful! Rated: 2/10 May 20, 2025 Full Review Manuel Betancourt FilmWeek (LAist) To me, it's Leoni who steals the show... A fun, enjoyable ride. James J Death of a Unicorn is a film that promises magic but delivers mediocrity—a frustratingly uninspired attempt at blending dark humor with fantasy horror. The premise, centered around a mysterious unicorn and the chaos it unleashes, is ripe for an engaging story, yet the execution is lifeless. The script stumbles between forced quirkiness and half-baked satire, never fully committing to either. The biggest disappointment lies in how little the film does with its intriguing concept. The pacing drags, the world-building is weak, and the emotional stakes are nonexistent. The characters—aside from a select few—are written with such little depth that it’s hard to care about any of them. The film also suffers from a tonal imbalance, unsure whether it wants to be a biting critique of corporate greed or a macabre fairy tale, resulting in a muddled experience that fails to land its punches. Jenna Ortega delivers a decent performance when her character isn’t busy acting like an obnoxious middle schooler despite being college-aged, and Paul Rudd is, well, Paul Rudd. If there’s any reason to watch Death of a Unicorn, it’s for Will Poulter and Anthony Carrigan, who inject some much-needed humor and energy into an otherwise lifeless affair. Poulter’s comedic timing is sharp, and Carrigan’s quiet awkwardness is hilarious, stealing every scene he’s in. Their moments are the rare highlights of an otherwise forgettable movie. Unfortunately, even their charm isn’t enough to salvage a film that lacks vision, leaving Death of a Unicorn as little more than a missed opportunity.
