David Ansen Newsweek This monstrous love story serves up film noir at its most darkly authentic: it plays for keeps. dave s Arturo Ripstein's Deep Crimson is a darkly amusing and visually impressive examination of sociopathic behavior. Coral (Regina Orozco) is the delusional mother of two young children who spends her days dreaming of romance. Nicholas (Daniel Gimenez Cacho) is a hustler, stealing from women who hope to date him. After the two meet, they eventually embark on a journey of theft and murder. Despite the fact that their nebulous relationship always feels a bit vague, their killing spree is both horrific and fascinating. The film is beautiful to look at - the sepia tone appearance allows the audience to almost feel the heat and taste the dust – and is aided by nimble camerawork, similar to the constantly probing lens of a Scorsese film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Ripstein remarkable movie about real life based serial killers goes deeper than any Hollywood version of it, from The Honeymoon Killers to Natural Born Killers. Deep Crimson shows a unique understanding and profound love connection between two unlikeable characters. You're supposed to hate Nicolas and Coral, but instead you actually feel their own frustrations and understand their actions. With a splendid brief performance by Julieta Egurrola, wonderful art direction, music and top notch acting by Giménez Cacho and Regina Orozco, this is the movie that should've won the Oscar for Foreign Movie in 1997. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member See The Honeymoon Killers instead. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member A sick and twisted love story. Gem of modern Mexican cinema. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member La película más accesible de Ripstein, da una versión muy interesante del "amor"... Regina Orozco, genial. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Fantastic cinematography and fascinating, but unsympathetic, characters. It oddly manages to use a lot of facts about the actual Lonely Hearts murderers from the US while creating a fictional account staged in Mexico. An interesting, mad love thriller with so screwed up they could be real main characters. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
