Anton Bitel Sight & Sound concerns the holes that artists must face - and fill - in their darkest hours of the soul... a hit-and-miss satire of that sweet spot where art pushes hard against commerce. Jun 3, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews

Elicio E This is a dark satire of the commercial art world. I have been there, known the people that the movie talks about in real life, the mercenary curators who decide who lives and dies in the art world but who have no talent themselves, the sellouts, the artists that just were lucky and think it was talent that got them there, the real desperation of having an idealistic view of the art world to find out its so full of falseness, the frustration of having unrecognized talent, or no talent at all, in the case of the protagonist. The loneliness of it all. All these are things all artists face, and this is where this movie fails, its commentary is squarely aimed at people who understand or have lived through this. But, how many people who watch an horror film are expecting a bitter commentary on the art world that can cause the knowing smile, or smirk, only on those who have lived through it? Not a great movie nor great acting, and absolutely not for all, but I would recommend it to artists and could be part of any arts degree classes for its painfully accurate portrayal of the modern commercial art world. Sadly the satiric portrayal of the stereotypes in it is closer to reality than I would wish. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/31/23 Full Review Audience Member It saddens me to see this film so unfairly criticised by some other reviews here. Simultaneously ambitious and yet humble, Deep Dark falls squarely into the B+ movie range. Lacking the budget and acting heavyweights to elevate it to the heights it could reach, it instead wisely keeps the majority of the plot contained to a single, pseudo-Lovecraftian apartment. Watching this as a purely realistic film is missing the entire point - rather, it blends the symbolic and fantastical with the melancholy of being an artist in a commercial world. The concept of the Something-in-the-Wall is a stroke of genius. We are never totally sure what she, or it, is. Never sure of her capabilities, her aims and objectives. Yet we cant help but treat her as a human, even knowing that she is not. Sean McGrath approaches his character with an incredible restraint. He never devolves into melodrama, managing to balance the surreal reality of his predicament with a palpable sense of sadness. Moments that seem like clumsy delivery simply add to the feeling that these are real, socially awkward people, rather than the slick A+ fare we're used to. Anne Sorce, too, pulls off a swaggering Devora despite the limited resources to show her burgeoning art empire. In a late scene, she sells us the version of Devora behind her mask, and ultimately, the layer behind that, as well. All in all, an excellent film that dares to be different, and is unafraid of letting the audience wonder at what they're not being explicitly shown. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member I liked this was original bizarre I wish to know what was inside the hole Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Really the actual acting was atrocious and the plot was insanely stupid. I watched this by mistake thinking it was a movie I actually wanted to see.... Ooooooh boy was I wrong. Where do I begin. For one, seeing a full grown man finger and have sex with a strange demon glory hole in a dirty nasty apartment wall was not something I felt was needed or really pushed the plot forward. I mean if having sex with walls is your thing watch this movie right now. Otherwise that's is without a doubt the highlight of the entire movie. He bangs a wall and it spits out weird eggs that he makes into ugly mobiles. It attacks some ginger lady and the movie totally doesn't explain anything about what happened to her (unless I missed it while yawning and rolling my eyes waiting for something meaningful to take place?) Either way the entire tone of the movie was what I assume was the writers desperately trying to find a way to show a man sexually pleasuring a violent wall hole to become rich in the art world. I can not understand what even caused me to finish this garbage because the ending was just as stupid as the entire movie. Please dear god do not give away your precious time on earth viewing this film. Anyone who claims to like it is a hipster who likes it ironically or for a stupid reason they don't understand but contains large words to make them seen chic and important. I enjoyed writing this much more than I enjoyed this stupid stupid stupid pointless anticlimactic gutter waste. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Was a bit weird and strange. But found my self sympathizing with the hole whose needs are just about as real as any humans. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member what a weird f&/ed up movie. With a good actor might have been ok. kept waiting for the "feed me"line to be thrown in a la Little shop of Horrors Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
