Yves T I had this warm, comfy feeling that this film was from a Jim Thompson novel (it isn't): there's the bone-headed innocent main character with a target on his back, the friendly, slick older guy who befriends him, you just know that's going to lead to trouble, and the girl who's either actually desperate to be saved, or a great actress working with Slick— in brief, another welcome variation on After Dark My Sweet. To make up for poor picture quality (in daylight scenes all the colors are orange, nights are all blue) there's the fabulous Peter Coyote as the smooth manipulator; other actors put in an honest day's work. The Big Twist at the end is unfortunate: strains credulity, and at the same time goes "clunk: I've become such a cliche." But the ride there is richly satisfactory.
