Anton Bitel Sight & Sound virus thriller Deranged (Yeon-ga-si) tries hard to break free of its Contagion shackles by giving its infection a truly bizarre origin & symptomatology... [but] ends up being both preposterously silly and numbingly repetitive. Nov 30, 2012 Full Review Mark Olsen Los Angeles Times A disaster film with just the right touch of reality to ground the outre genre flourishes. Rated: 3/5 Aug 3, 2012 Full Review Village Voice Yes, there are messages about the callousness of big business and the recurring foolishness of man tampering with nature, but they're never didactic, and they never overwhelm the film's escapist thrills. Jul 25, 2012 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews Deranged is, for the most part, simply unable to become the tense or engrossing thriller promised by its admittedly spectacular setup. Rated: 1.5/4 Aug 7, 2012 Full Review David Noh Film Journal International Terrific, engrossing and intelligent epidemic thriller from Korea, which shows up American product like Contagion and Outbreak for their shallowness and commercialism. Audience Member Another great and original movie from Korea. The US will surely remake that one! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member interesting plot, but the whole storyline with the lead characters are so soapy, felt like watching K-drama. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Thrillerone epidemico. Davvero niente di nuovo, ma fa il suo sporco lavoro. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Jeong-woo Park goes with a national emergency in Deranged.
Like any thriller should, the film's story has some pretty solid buildup; however, even with only a run time of 1 hour 45 minutes, things get tiresome. Part of it is the events that unfold, while possibly more realistic in nature, are more frustrating than exciting.

The gore factor is minor and tolerable. It really isn't that bad once the pandemic is revealed for what it is, which the plot does quite early in the film. In turn, by doing this the rest of the story details become predictable.

Kim Myung-Min's character is a bit unlikable, but he is acceptable as the lead. Moon Jung-hee, Kim Dong-wan, and Lee Ha-nui are good cast fillers; the latter two could have been used more.

As far as national pandemic stories go, Deranged covers its bases. Even if it's once, it's worth a checkout.
Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member A parasitic virus wreaks havoc in Korea, causing people to jump into water to their gruesome death. Although I felt it was over dramatized and the timeline was kinda compromised, but this was scarier than Outbreak and Contagion combined!
