Tom L Interesting mashup of Catholic exorcist/possession tropes and Lovecraftian cosmic horror. This film definitely avoids becoming yet another lame exorcism cliche, using Catholicism and its associated lore as more of a backdrop for the glance into the abyss. The cinematography, art direction, and practical effects are all first-rate. There are numerous time jumps that can make the plot difficult to follow at times, but the main character’s drug addiction and the general sense of reality gone askew are actually enhanced by the confusion. I was reminded at times of the movie Angel Heart, as well as some definite Lynchian overtones. As abstract and non-linear as the story is, the shock of the sometimes violent and gory effects as well as the portrayal of Catholic tropes that the Vatican would definitely not approve of keeps things bracing and engaging. While Lovecraftian in mood, the only direct references to Lovecraft’s works are a few passing mentions of names like Yog Sothoth and Azathoth, plus a name check of The Rats in the Walls. Deus Irae is undoubtedly a unique and fiercely original film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Amy F What a weird and wonderful ride!
