Emilie Black Cinema Crazed For all of its muscle cars and the sexiness of the title character, the film is quite bland, boosting a group of basic, expected desert town settings and a lackluster story. Rated: 2/5 Apr 19, 2020 Full Review Steve Dread Central While Devil Girl won't be setting the mainstream on fire, those who share my curiosity for experimental type films should find it to be well above average. Audience Member Not a horror movie, but a crazy independent rock-n-roll independent flick featuring muscle cars, strippers, a psychotic drugged-out evil clown, and a soundtrack that needs to be released NOW. Sure, it's uneven, the story is a bit thin sometimes and it gets a little slow here and there, but this qualifies as modern grindhouse. Rob Zombie meets Quentin Tarentino, and it entertains with its sheer insanity. Fay driving her deceased father's muscle car cross country on Route 66 breaks down in a small desert town marked only by a sign that reads "Hell Ahead." She crosses path with an insane clown who steals her wallet, forcing her to take a job as a stripper. The town is dominated by a fundamentalist preacher with a very nasty secret. Enter the devil girl, who looks to come straight out Coop's art. Devil Girl interacts with the characters, showing them what might be the truth about themselves. The Devil Girl is stalking everyone. The clown and the preacher are stalking Fay (short for Faith). Fay is just trying to get out of the town, but it isn't going to be easy to survive her visit. Numerous street races and burlesque scenes ensue, all accompanied by a killer score and strong cinematography. The clown is twitchy, incoherent and threatening and Devil Girl is drop-dead beautiful. Fay is a bit textureless at times, but the flick is as much about the craziness that goes on around her as it is about Fay herself. The ending of the flick goes off the rails, unfortunately, and winds up taking away from the overall film... but the rest is pretty wild. If you like grindhouse, you're going to like "Devil Girl." Turn the volume up, turn your brain off and just go with it. And remember... people knew how to fly before they learned how to fall!
