Critics Consensus

Though it is ultimately somewhat undone by its own lofty ambitions, The Devil's Advocate is a mostly effective blend of supernatural thrills and character exploration.

David Gritten Daily Telegraph (UK) Pacino impressionists will have a field day with this material for years to come. The Devil's Advocate may be too long, with an irritatingly drawn-out climax, but for its first 90 minutes Pacino makes it a hoot. Sep 24, 2025 Full Review Michael Bodey The Age (Australia) Devil's Advocate possesses such assets and problems that many will be divided in whether to applaud it for its witless audacity or chastise it for its contemptuous treatment of its audience. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 6, 2024 Full Review Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader At half its present length it might make an OK midnight camp item. Aug 10, 2020 Full Review Matthew Sweet Independent on Sunday Devil-as-lawyer is perhaps too obvious. But Devil-as-hairdresser -- now that's genuinely terrifying. Sep 24, 2025 Full Review Philip French Observer (UK) That at least 30 minutes too long, The Devil's Advocate is a great deal of fun. It's erotic, knowing, frightening, and extremely well designed. Sep 24, 2025 Full Review Mike Davies Birmingham Post It's risible melodrama. But diabolically good fun. Sep 24, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Jack t The Devil's Advocate is quite possibly one of more essential ones that really stood the test of time even when it comes to the following it had. With the exception of Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino appearing in it and due to another one of those movies by Warner Bros that I've not heard of as a kid but not had any interest in it whatsoever, I finally got to see it. So with that exception, let's get right to it. Kevin Lomax played by Keanu Reeves, is a defense attorney who never lost a case is being asked by a New York law firm to assist them with a jury selection after what had happen in court afterwards. After the jury delivers a not-guilty verdict, the head of the firm, John Milton played by Al Pacino, offers him a job, and he and his wife Mary Ann played by Charlize Theron, move to Manhattan. Kevin is assigned to represent a billionaire, who is accused of murdering his wife, his stepson, and a maid. He sees less of his wife and fantasizes about his co-worker. The film has itself an satanic theme to it even when it comes to the supernatural nature in New York City especially the sexualise nature to the point where it began perversely. I'm surprised to see Delroy Lindo who does Voodoo magic but for some reason he was uncredited for the role. I don't know why but you won't get to see him in it a lot. There's is a lawsuit that actually happened in which it had something to do with the sculpture featuring human forms as you see in many scenes in Milton's place as it pops up in which Frederick Hart who own the sculpture didn't take kindly to the usage it presented in the film without his permission so that's why people called this one "Hart v. Warner Bros., Inc." If you own the copy of The Devil's Advocate you will see a notice label at the back mentioning the sculpture lawsuit that says and I quote: "The large white sculpture of human forms on the wall of John Milton's penthouse in "Devil's Advocate" is not connected in any way and was not endorsed by the sculptor Frederick Hart or the Washington National Cathedral, joint copyright owners of the Cathedral sculpture "Ex Nihilo" in Washington, D.C." Unquote. Well, I don't know about you, guys, but people who involved themselves in this, what are you gonna do, what are you gonna lose? "Lose? I don't lose! I win! I win! I'm a lawyer! That's my job. That's what I do." "Look, but don't touch. Touch, but don't taste. Taste, but don't swallow." What can I say about Devil's Advocate that hasn't been said by anybody? Well, all I can say is it's such a good film. It's supernatural, but not scary, sexual, but not erotic, satanic, but not sinful. Hahaha. It has some moments with Al Pacino with his hilarious scene stealing scenes and charismatic moments. If you have a devil inside you, just don't listen to the bad seed that he is been giving you. Surely you won't want to have a dead guy on your conscience. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/31/25 Full Review Tomato S hey guys so im back after not watching a single film for like 2 months bc ive been binging house md 😎😎 (anyways thats not the point...but hey u should deffff check it out) ok so about this film right so i basically nicknamed this "american psycho remastered with a hint (maybe a bit more) of religion" well the first part is meh...keanu and the wife were kissing for basically every scene and then it came the moving to new york which is never a good sign becuase you can literally smell the freaks from 1000 miles away. anyways and then u see the star and to this day idk if its on purpose of not that they named him "john milton" like the guy who wrote paradise lost?? is this supposed to be an allusion and if so its a nice 👍oh yeah and also the office thing looks a heck lot like american psycho just a lot more brutalist...and the rooftop thingy....did they reference the matrix??? woahhhh guys ok and then the best part starts when the wife starts becoming schizo 😯😯and i liked how the devil was commentating on eddie and like mocking him and also ikkkkk a lottt of people r gonna say the church scenes are blasphemous....yes i TOALLY see where ur coming from as a christan but not a really good one my stomach CHURNED on the first scene, i really didnt think that was necessary at all...but the second scene actually holds some meaning and i actually really liked that one (NOT supporting what the characters r doing at all, more so the idea that some christians appear as loyal, faithful, but behind there just committing bad sins, and this film shows it in a way that really destroy the barrier between church appearance and "personal times" so the message gets across as shocking) oh yeah and not to be judging or anything (i sin a lot too ok) but...ahemm....politicians...ahem....beofre i get too side tracked i want to talk about the climax bascially the scene where milton keanu and the girl (im so sorry keanu ive been addressing u by ur real name idk why) but theire in a big room and milton starts yapping about God and why he likes that mankind sin and freewill is good but he keeps guilt tripping?? or like telling keanu to blame himself for his wife and bascially saying that sin is good but if u do it then u should be ashamed bc God dont like that right??? (but ofcc we know its wrong) and then omg they actually referenced paradise lost bc keanu said my favourite line that its better to reign in hell than served in heaven and sdhflaksjd i gotta do a full analysis on that like 7 words in the future 🤌🤌 on about the ending (finally) i didnt really get why keanu shot himself liek ikkk u have to end the film but it doesnt make logical sense bc yes hes on the fence ALL of the film like he tries hes hardest to resist girls n stuff and also he lost everything, and i was confused at first to but then i think the last part (even more confusing) kinda realtes to this....so the last part is really like american psycho..we question if half of the film even existed or not...and in both films the characters get a realization last second...for this film keanu bascially realized that oh yeah sin is in our nature BUT u can avoid it BUT it comes with consequences and i think the devil is just a showcase to bring him to that realization but at the VERY end he decides to drop the case bc i feel he has good intentions ok yeah sorry for the long yap session i yap a lot when it comes to religon and sutff but lets talk about the rating, i gave it a 3.5, its really not a bad film, for people that usually watch a lot of films dealing with sensitive topics, this film is a def recommendation. but theres probably also a really senetive group that dislike purely bc it portrays sin in such a grotesque and open way..but hey u gotta think deeper right?? for me personally the poor gore and cgi really threw me off bc i betcha they didint really study blood splatters or the fact that skin needs to be CUT OPEN for there to be blood (blood doesnt just flow out outta nowehre 😭😭 AND ALSO I NOICTED WHY IS THIS FILM MADE SO CLOSE TO WHEN I WAS BORN???? I THOUGHT THIS WAS MADE IN THE 90s OR SOMTHING 💀💀 ok bye imma watch some kpop demon hunters before i gugugugaga Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/21/25 Full Review thiago s Filme mais ou menos, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas de terror são mais ou menos, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/17/25 Full Review Oaklee D Has some of Keanu Reeves best acting and Al Pacino is over the top as always, other than that I couldn't really get into this one as much as I should have. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/09/25 Full Review Alejandra C OG. just go watch it. Its a must Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/06/25 Full Review Audience Member Absolutely worth a watch.
