Audience Member Apparently the pilot for a TV show that was never broadcast. Not a top notch story even by 1961 TV standards but okay and benefitting from Lon Chaney Jr. in a mephistophelean role. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Chaney as the devil--So-so horror omnibus!! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty stale and simple plot, the characters are uninteresting and Chaney Jr's performance is pretty average. There isn't much to the story and it ends rather dully and confusingly. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review andy f A Lon Chaney film that he's hardly in, much as the pattern went for a lot of his 60s offerings. A terrific anthology of chillers each of which is pretty effective and full of atmosphere. The worst thing about the film is the ludicrous wraparound story featuring Chaney and the ultimately awful ending. The trio of horror shorts though are a real treat. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I've seen my fair share of old movies poorly transferred to DVD. Whether it's a well-regarded classic ("Texas Chainsaw Massacre") to an execrable piece of garbage that should have been forgotten in the intervening years ("Winterset)," among others, films both in and out of the public domain are prey to the tender mercies of unrestored (and justifiably unheralded) releases. That said, "The Devil's Messenger" might be the worst DVD transfer I've ever seen. Public domain duds made before 30 years before it look better. On the "Messenger" DVD, half of the dialogue is inaudible, the music sounds like it was recorded in a Cracker Jack box, scratches and black lines interfere with about every frame, and the color is abysmally washed out. Technical difficulties, compounded with the sub-"Twilight Zone" story, makes this one to skip. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member The stories in this anthology are much better (not exactly horrifying, but interesting or unique) than most other anthology horrors. Lon Chaney is great, and although the whole thing is super cheese, it's still a pretty entertaining albeit funny watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
